Has anyone here every used usps to ship and asked for a "tracking number" for the package, only to be handed a small piece of paper that says "Delivery Confirmation Number". Which sounds like it will only tell me if and when the package was recieved?
If so then please inform me of what is number is actually capableof doing.
Thanks!

It don't mean nuthin! Just confirms to you that the package was shipped and if in a reasonable amount of time for delivery passes, you have that number to go to the PO and have them trace it.

K that is total BS, I even got back in line after I noticed it (unfortunately got the same teller), and asked "will this tell me when it's left here and what warehouses it goes to along the way?", and she said "Yes, this tracking number, this tracking number" (as she points to the little paper and the receipt).

So I called their 800 number wasted 15 min on hold to finally gt a human, asked the same thing... His response: "Ya, it will tell you where its been in between drop off and delivery." And "The only item you can get a "tracking number" for is Express Mail." So why do they have both services?
Never using them again..
Unfortunately I have to email a tracking number to autoanything.com before they will refund my credit card for the Continental Yellowstuffs which don't fit the Marks.
Bad things come in threes, what's next... Oh yeah, I'm running a fever.

Sorry
End Rant

I am a clerk in the USPS and at the moment, we are implementing point by point tracking like UPS uses. As a clerk, we have to scan every bar code that can be scanned three times to let people know it was shipped to our office, then another scan to say it arrived and one more scan to say it is ready to go out for delivery and then finally the carrier has to scan it when he delivers the package. One of the big fish in the PO came down from Charlotte to tell us this new way of scanning will allow customers to track it just like UPS does using satellite technology.

Now I feel really bad for giving those wrong part numbers. Sorry for the ensuing chaos.

Hey no problem,
I know there is always a risk when ordering something the manufacturer doesn't list as compatible. On the other hand if USPS is actually going to track that package, they should really change the terminology.

Btw: In my original post it where it says she pointed to "tracking number" both the receipt and little paper say "Delivery Confirmation Number".

YOU, as the shipper, get this information..... the poor recipient does not!

I'm having a problem understanding what the problem here is. I ship USPS every day (First Class, Priority, Express, Media) and always get a tracking number that I can enter at www.usps.com and get the tracking info. Now sometimes it's a little delayed in the info but it still is trackable.

What DLF posts below is what it means today. I guess all that extra work is paying off. Just go to WWW.usps.com and plug in the del con number and it should show you everything you need to know.

Well, they must be VERY late in posting any packages that were sent to me....even in your example above, the package as already been delivered! At that point who really cares? I want to track it's progress across country (like a UPS track). All I ever get is "Check Later". By "Later", I have it.

Bud, let it go.....

I get an email notice at every stop. I can track the package progress both to and from me.

Maybe they just don't like you?

It doesn't do any good to track it if the mail carrier won't deliver it!

9 out of 10 packages I get from USPS, I get a slip in the mailbox that tells me to go to the post office. :(

The UPS man on the other hand will deliver packages to my work place even if they are addressed to my home! :)

It's privately run, but is under supervision of the postmaster general and is subject to all postal laws...ie.it is a federal crime to interfere with or fail to deliver the mail.

One time my postman ignored our outgoing mail...he just decided he wasn't going to do it. I filed a complaint. I don't know what happened to him, but we have a new mailman now.
