Vista Is Outta Here

A few months ago I bought an "open box" Dual Core Gateway computer. It had Vista OS. I thought I would give it a chance and try it.

Well I did. And I got good and fed up with Vista, I tell you. It is now gone!

For the past week, I've been collecting drivers for the XP Pro install. Today I formated the hard drive and started on a clean slate.

I was surprised to find out that the motherboard's built in LAN would not work. I didn't get a driver for that. The audio also didn't work because I didn't have a driver for that either. But everything else worked.

To get internet access so that I could update my XP install to SP2, I installed a LinkSys LAN card and rocked and rolled.

Once the OS was up to date, I went to The motherboard's vendor site (Intel) and downloaded the necessary drivers. I just now got the audio to work and removed the LinkSys card and now the built in Lan works.

I even found Bios for the motherboard for XP.

Now I gotta wear a seat belt when I drive this thing -- It's Fast!

I bought a computer (HP) right about the time VISTA was to be sent free after its release. I did receive it late spring 2007. I installed it and within 2 days was back to XP!! I have since replaced wife's computer and it came with VISTA preinstalled...THAT seemed to be a MUCH better system...don't know why, maybe had something to do with my original install was an "UPGRADE" to VISTA and her's came with it already installed.

Just get a Mac and be done with all those Windoze problems

Definitely. I do run XP under Parallels for some compatibility with those who aren't Mac friendly, but beyond that - it's all mac, all the time for me!

Most of us don't want to spend $2K to upgrade a MAC when we can spend $200 to upgrade a PC...

$2K to upgrade a Mac? Upgrade to what? The only upgrade i spent in the last three years is $129 to the new Leopard operating system.

I don't think so.

I've been Apple-less since 1980 -- why switch how?

I still have a TRS-80 that works!!!!

Talk about stuck in a rut.

Rich people own Macs...us comman folk run PC's.

I always laugh at that, especially since a comparable spec'd PC is MORE expensive than a Mac!

Use what works best for you though.

I just like that fact that I have never had to deal with a virus, registry problem, loss of data or DRIVERS! Been down that driver road with Dells at work. I never understood why the 98/ME/XP... etc... do not come with all the drivers???

So for me a Mac works best. My time is to valuable to me to deal with all the problems Windows brings. Linux or OS X all the way!

If OSX is anything like Vista, I feel for you.

Maybe for some one who never used any previous OS, Vista works, but for the hard core, experienced user, Vista sucks. Even when you get rid of the User Interface (that ask you obvious questions), it still sucked.

Half of the stuff on the HD that the OS put there, I had no access to. "You do not have permission to access this folder."

Well, I fixed its wagon, I accessed it anyway by formatting the HD!

Can you say "terminated with extreme prejudice?"

LOL I forgot about ad! :D

If Vista were like OS X there would be no need to downgrade OR buy new Hardware. I am running Leopard (which there is ONLY client and server) on a 600MHz 256MB G4 eMac. Runs fine although its WAY under spec.

I think thats been the biggest downfall of Vista. Requirements are not realistic at all.

I think Vista is just like ME. ME was more of a "we need money now since 2000 is not ready". I think Vista, with all its missing features, is premature. I am sure the next release, 5 years from now, will be much more solid.

I don't know what is up with all that Vista hating... I run Win 2000 at work, I had WIN Xp on my old laptop...

Now on both my new computer I am running Vista.

Never crashed yet.... much more visually appealing than XP. I love it. It is a bit more demanding than XP on my laptop since even though it is 2x as fast as my previous one it doesn't really feel like it. But the desktop runs flawlessly with Intel Q6600 and 3 gigs of ram.

Just as quick as ugly (in comparison XP) on my friends comp.

I would have gone with Apple, but their equipment cost 30-50% higher than comparably equipped PCs. :(

Go back to post #11 and click on a couple of the links for cost analysis.

Those are not good comparisons...at least not for me. I do NOT require the fastest, hottest thing on the market....I have rarely found Apple's "ON SALE", brand new with a complete manufacturers warranty. I have purchased my last two (mine and wife's) within the last year and couple of months and as I usually buy "behind the power curve", I get real good price breaks...nor did I require monitors...another big price reduction. I would not buy at Circuit City at this time in there existence as they can no longer compete in pricing as can someplace such as Office Depot or Staples.

I read your article and was NOT impressed....but I WILL say that the Apple/PC wars will continue ad nausium. That's all I will say about this subject....

Sorry most of what is in that Article doesn't apply to me...

I purchased a 1.6Dual Core laptop (HP DV6701) with a 15.4" screen 160gig HD 2 gigs of ram and a webcam for $579. A 2 GHZ 1 gig 80 gig Macbook is $1100.

Also the Desktop

HP Q6600 quad core with 3 gigs of ram 640 gigs HD, blah blah was $700 plus 260 for a 22" samsung screen. A comparable Imac is $1300 granted packaged more nicely.

Don't get me wrong they are great computers but grossly overpriced for my uses.

Thats why I say get what works for you. Some people want a Ford Focus and others a Porsche. Its about functionality AND taste.

I have yet to have a Mac fail on me, I pay more for a better quality products. Not that Macs are immune to failure, of course it happens.

However my neighbor is on his third PC in 10 years! My mom is on her 4th in 8 years. From blown power supplies that took the mobo with it to faulty RAM to failed hard drives.

If you just an internet/e-mailing person. PCs are fine is you feel the urge to play with anti-virus software/spyware and payiing $40 for a decent package to combat that.

If you an audio pro/graphics pro/web designer then the Mac works great! If your an IT guy who runs a server farm, etc... go with Unix/Linux flavors.

The right tool for the right job!
