VRCM Module

I think my VRCM Module gave up the ghost today. Started up the car and moved it back in the driveway, shut it off and smelled a burning rubber smell. Raised the hood and saw white smoke coming from in front of the radiator. Tried to start the car and move it away from the house (after thought, leave it there and get a new house and Mark VIII after the fire) but it would not start just cranks and cranks. Looked at the fuses under the hood and found that the 20A fuse for the VRCM/EDIS Module was blown. Pulled the trim panel off to get a good look at the VRCM Module, it looks like some rubbery substance is oozing out of the sides. The question is does anyone know where I can get one. Looks like Rock Auto offers a send in and rebuild service for it, has anyone used this option? On a lighter note, I am sure my Mark did it on purpose, since I was promoted from Finance Director to New Car Sales Manager at my dealership, I have been driving a SS Camaro for the last 2 weeks putting it to bed at night right next to the Mark, I am sure it got a case of the A** and said I"ll show him. A Lincoln with an ATTITUDE!

I regret that I do not have a module to sell you, but congratulations on the promotion!

I "think" I might have one at home, but won't know until then. I'm in NY on vacation but will be home Thursday evening. Let me know if you want me to look. Ummm, are there differences in a Gen I and Gen II module?

Bud, the 93,94,95 are all the same, but 96,97,98 are different, I think (not for sure) the later years only control the cooling fan, where the early years control both the cooing fan and the fuel pump.

They perform the same basic functions, but the OBD2 models have different wiring than the EEC-IV models.

I have found a module locally. Picking it up tomorrow. I just hope that something else is not wrong to make the module fry. If it works I will try and have the original one rebuilt or buy up a large stock of used ones. If anyone has had one rebuilt let me know where and how much. Thanks Mark :D

Check the amperage of the cooling fan. It is possible it is drawing too much load which overstressed the VCRM.

Well I got a good look at the damage today. Thought I would repalce the VRCM. This is what I found. So its off to the Ford Dealer on a flat bed to get fixed. I was able to get the 24 pin connector from the car I got the VRCM off of. I am not up to splicing 24 wires togather in a small tight area. Thank God I am still in good favor with the Ford Dealer I was GSM at for 13 years.

Ouch! I hope they don't charge you by the hour.

They do but its $60 per hour, I figure a good 3 hours shoud do it.

She's back

Just picked up the Mark from the Ford Dealer. To install and rewire the control module plug was only $250.00. The whole bill was just under $500 because while it was there I had them replace the bushing & seal in the tranny cone (leaking) and install new and rekey ignition switch (typical problem switch ears would spin around without the key in ignition). Not sure what caused the problem, cooling fan seems to be ok but I am going to replace it this weekend myself just to be sure.

Glad to hear you're back on the road. I'd pay $250 to have somebody else deal with that mess. Not bad at all!
