WEIRD "Check Charging System" msg

Yesterday, while working on the Mark, I took my dash apart, and when I unplugged the lighting control module, my exterior lights come on (safety feature I guess)....... so I just kept working and working (I didn’t like it, but I had no choice) at any rate.. A few minutes later, the check charging system message come on, at that time, my heart dropped, because that only means one thing, your alternator will die in approximately 30secs, and you will start the Gen one “alternator drama”. So the lights in the car stayed on, but the car wouldn’t crank. So I throw everything in my hand and ran for the connection cables, connected it to my bro's car... And it cracked just fine ever since.... has this ever happened to anyone?

I thought it would mean the alternator was dead or something... I didn’t want any of those Gen one issues, I already have a few of mine already.

RE: WEIRD "Check Charging System" msg

you could use a battery charger instead of your brothers car. That would save on your alternator. Also I make sure to disconnect the battery before I do any work under my dash or any other wiring work.

RE: WEIRD "Check Charging System" msg

I agree, but I was not doing any electrical work, just cosmetic.

I just thought that message meant something was permanently damaged in the car. The interior lights were on just normally, but the car would not crank.

RE: WEIRD "Check Charging System" msg

When I first bought my car I had the car for 2 or 3 weeks before I got the paperwork to sign the title over (ebay) so I didn't drive it at all during that time. The battery went dead 2 or 3 times, either from me just sitting in it listening to the radio, or for some other reason. Anyway I put the charger on it to charge it back up. I also got the check charging system message when the battery was near dead and my interior lights also looked like normal, but the car wouldn't start, now that I can drive the car the battery stays charged better and I haven't had issue with the battery being too dead to start the car.

So I bet once you charge the battery back up (either with a charger or your alternator by way of jump start) you should be fine. And I wouldn't worry about it happening again, unless your battery is being used with the car off for a long period of time again, and then it would simply be a matter of charging the battery back up again.

RE: WEIRD "Check Charging System" msg

Yup, sounds like the same issue. I just never knew there was a message for the battery going low. But now it makes perfect sense.
thanx for your input.

P.S. about listening to the radio and not being able to drive.... well, I can relate to that when I got my first car, I didn’t even have a license yet, so all I would do is just there, wash it, and listen to the radio, but I would start it once in a while to get things going. So every time my dad heard my car, he looked out the window, and I make the excuse of doing it so the battery won’t lose its charge. I kept pretending that I’m driving for almost a month. haha, those were the days.
