and it wasn't a drag strip either.
The president of one of my clients booked Shannonville Raceway's long road course for the day last Monday, and invited some of his customers and suppliers to join him for a little practice.
My associate and I drove his 1996 Viper GTS and his 2000 Cobra R 90 miles to the track, then had a fabulous time blasting around the racecourse.
The host of the event brought his Porsche GT2, and several other Porsches showed up, as well as a C5 Corvette and a Ferrari 575 Maranello.
The GT2 was turning laps at 1:12 on slicks; a race-prepared 968 was turning 1:11's. The Ferrari was awful on street tires - even the owner didn't enjoy pushing it around the track.
I managed a best of 1:27 in the Cobra R and 1:24 in the Viper. Although the Cobra R is much more nimble than the Viper, it's easier to not mess up gear selection with the Viper because of its ungodly torque.
At the end of the day I got to run a couple of laps in a tweaked Porsche 911 Turbo S (AWD, approx 500 HP) - WOW!!! - fantastic cornering and braking, and unbelievable acceleration as the turbo boost climbs!!
I've never had so much fun with cars before! Drag racing is fun, but this was exhilarating. Driving performance cars the way they were meant to be driven. I've now got a lot of respect for guys who race in a regular series - it's physically and mentally draining to run lap after lap and hit all the apexes and braking points correctly (not that I claim to have hit any of them correctly :+).
When we finally got the Viper and Cobra R back home, the odometers read 2610 and 339 miles respectively. Just nicely broken in. }(
