Well it happened now what

While intalling my sct chip, I sanded a little to hard to remove the plastic and about 3 of my of the silver outlets are showing a little bronze color.
When I intalled the chip, gear ratio error, and temp error showed on the screen and the rpms droped to 0. But The car does run fine with the chip out.

lincoln wants 100 just to look at it when I already know what the problem is.

looks like I just lost 300 dollars

Do you mean on when you sanded the circuit board connector on the back of the ECU the metal contacts came off? Could you take a picture of the problem?

They are plated with a thin layer of gold. You just rubbed off the gold. So long as there is copper on the pad it will conduct. Make sure the other side of the contact is very clean and had good gripping power. The gold to gold contact is important for low current signals. there is not enough current to blast through surface oxides.

Two, CLEAN copper contacts should work.

gold ?? the only gold I see is on the chip, the contacts are siliver and I sanded to the copper

when too much material has been removed from the contacts to properly connect with the chip.. There isnt' ANYTHING Lincoln can/will do other than take your 100.00.

You need to get someone that is electicial saavy to "re-tin" your connections on your PCM.

Dont waste your time with Lincoln, they will only want to SELL you a new PCM, you dont need a new PCM or "Lincolns help".

A radio/TV repair shop or maybe a repair tech at radio shack {radio shack should be a last resort} anyways.. "re-tin the connection".

on a side note..

Did you split the case on the PCM apart when you cleaned the connection?
IF not.. you may not have gotten "the other side" clean enough...

Your problem may not be a "re-tin" problem, but a "not clean enough" connector on the backside.

Give that a shot before working towards the "re-tin" solution.

it's "possible" to get the connector clean enough without splitting the case, but in my experience, it's better to "do it once, and do it right".

We split the cases everytime we install a chip nowadays, rather than "clean, install, reclean, install, clean again, install.... and still have connection problems.

hope one of these scenario's help!

So I cracked the case open and yeah I missed a lot of plastic, I dont know what I was thinking the first time, but when I when I plugged it in it still reads, gear ratio, temp and traction error. the only think i know that works is my fan turning on.

Did you spray the chip & the board when you got done with a GOOD contact cleaner? Or even use a 97% (or higher) rubbing alcohol and clean the connections and pins.

id go with the retinning also...

All u did was take off too much material. Just have someone heat it up and lay in a trail of solder to make the connection fit tight again. Sand off excess solder and make sure all trails do not overlap or conduct to each other. Check for continuity and make sure back side is all clean terminals also. Only the plastic should of been removed, but you can put it back to right with a little time and effort and some mean soldering skills. Bring to TV repair or similar and tell them you cleaned "though" the contact pins and to retin for you.
It doesnt have to be gold, silver solder is just fine. It does need to be clean and snug on Both sides so All the pins on EEC are touching All the proper trails on the chip. Bring the shop the EEC also so they can check fitment once chip has been repaired. Take your time and use heat sinks to keep heat away from chip. I wouldnt think it would be any more than 25.00 for an honest shop to fix it for you.

You don't know how common this is with a lot of my chip customers, cleaning only one side. Never take you vehicle to a dealer when it concerns a chip or programmer. It always turns out bad for you since they just don't understand anything but stock.

Anyways, the biggest problem with installing a chip with the coating still on is that the chip will cut through some of it. Then when you pull the chip back out the coating stays in the chip causing some bad continuity between the chip and board. This will cause issues with the tune and possibly damage the EEC, chip, or a component. So be very careful and make sure there is no coating in the chip.

Also taking the tin off all the way will not hurt the board.
