My 93 Mark Just started to whine upon excelleration. It almost sounds like when a power steering pump goes bad but for some reason, I don't think that it is the power steering. Almost sounds like its comming from the top of the engine. Could it be my alternator??

Thank You,

Any number of pulleys could make that noise if they are starting to go out.

Have you removed the belt and turned all of them by hand?

RE: Whining like a superchargerq

Take a 3 foot length of heater hose and hold one end to your ear and carefully use the other end as an acoustic probe to find which pulley is the source of the noise. ;)

RE: Whining like a superchargerq

Hey thanks for the advice, I checked the pulleys and found that the one that is solid mounted is the one.

Is this the tension pulley or the idle pulley? Did I over tighten when I replaced the belt or is it just going bad?

The sound comes and goes but is getting louder and more frequent.

How long do I have and is it a catostrophic event when it goes?

Thank You,

Thanks for the advice, I did what you said and found it to be the solid mounted pulley. Which one is that and what happens when it finally goes??

I know that it's just a 30 dollar part but I need one more day.

Thank you,

If the pulley siezes, the belt will shred.

Dayco P/N 89007

76mm Flat Steel Pulley w/o flange

Same pulley for both tensioner and idler.

The idler pulley is the solid mounted pulley. The tensioner pully is the spring loaded hinged pulley. Make sure the tensioner pulley is not rubbing the front engine cover! If the tensioner wears out this can allow the tensioner pulley(and belt) to contact the front cover.
