I'm not a hockey fan, but Bob Costas said that the NHL claimed that it interferes with their season schedule.
However, a hockey friend of mine said the NHL tried to do this in prior Olympics, but came up against too much resistance.
If the NHL refuses to let their players be patriotic and serve their country, I don't want any part of the NHL.
It was a nail biter of a game!
Nothing's set in stone about whether or not NHL players will play in 4 years. It's under discussion. The problem is the condensed schedule we get for the regular NHL season. Not to mention as a team fan, worries about additional injuries and lack of rest. The Blackhawks had 3 players on Canada and one for the US. When it was over, we all breathed a sigh of relief that no one was injured, as what we care about more than gold, is a little thing called the Stanley Cup.
Then again, no true hockey fan likes Bettman, who makes decisions about the league. Hopefully he'd be out by then (hopefully he'd be out later today, but that won't happen).

Good point, but I think national pride comes before local pride.
Speaking as a Laker fan, I would not like Kobe passing on the Olympics even at the risk of injury or whatever. I'd rather have the Lakers lose to Cleveland than for the US to lose to Lithuania.

Although I agree in principle, almost all sports are now professional. Most of the skiing events are on the world cup tour.
We'd be left with very little to watch.
It's a very grey area.
All Russian and Chinese athletes are considered 'amateur', but their respective countries pay for their house, their cars, their food, their kids, their college, their coaches, their training, their equipment, their utility bills,...need I go on?
I really don't see why 'career' and 'hobby' have to be mutually exclusive.
