Something knocking inside my valve cover!

LOL! You guys are awesome! I'll be saying, "too many siren's and shooting out my windows during pursuits!' when I get older. Psssh....Cha.

Stethascope is pretty easy....just keep proding around until you find the loudest sound that you're hearing without the stethascope in your ears.

Alright, I am too stubborn to sell this car. Gonna drive something else while I fix it. I will miss this car too much. No stethecope, but with a length of hose I'd swear that the noise is coming from under the intake. Is there anything there that could possible make a noise? Do the IMRCs ever make noise? I could be wrong, and probably am.

I can't imagine the IMRCs making noise.

The first thing you need to do is pull the valve covers and inspect the valvetrain. Since the passenger side is the easiest, that could be the side to start with. But Murphy's law says since the drivers side is harder to remove, that is where the problem is.

Only other thought I had that may help would be to remove the serpentine belt and briefly run the engine again trying to determine which side to go to. I wouldn't run it any longer than necessary though.

I already ran it without the belt on, still makes the same noise. I'll start taking things apart when I get the other car. I'll keep posting here. Thanks.

valve spring or follower
not a huge deal, kinda a pita to fix.
worst part would be pulling the valve cover.

sorry i cant say pour (insert snake oil) and you'll be fine.

time to remove something and take a peek

^this!

It's odd. It seems to be loudest under the intake, right behind the alternator. I will start tearing things apart soon. I drove it today to work for the first time in a week, I had no other ride.

I had no other choice. Had to get to work. Using a piece of hose, I can't pick up any noise near the valve covers. If I put the hose down through the intake, I can hear it. I am also picking up a hissing around the throttle body, specificly by the front bolt on the passenger side.

Perhaps it's not a valvetrain issue, you could be lucky. You may have something else going on, but until you tear into it and find out, if it is a valvetrain problem it is only getting worse running it. Particularly running it under any kind of load.

If a follower came off and there is enough valvespring left to hold the valve closed, it may be an easy fix - that could also be why there is no mechanical noise from the valvecovers. What you would hear is the obvious effects of a valve not opening which would resonate through the intake.

I hate to beat a dead horse with this IMRC theory of mine, but I keep wondering. i was messing around with the car a couple days ago, and I could reach the rod on the actuator on the passenger side, and move it. The drivers side I could barely grab with my long curved needle noise pliers, and it felt like it wouldn't move. Not 100% sure, but if felt like it wouldn't move. On the same side, I broke the hard plastic vacuum line a while back, and replaced it with a weedwacked fuel line, which had collapsed. I repaired that, but it hasn't made a difference. I used a hose to listen for noise, and the only place I can hear it is if I put the hose inside the manifold, bewteen the tubes. I have gone over every inch of the heads and valve covers, and can't hear it. I even took off the oil cap and listened and heard nothing.

Does your car leak oil at all? If your hearing the noise between your intake its very possible you have a rod knock in your video that's what I hear if possible Jack the car up put Jack stands under it start the car and listen with your tube or a long wood handled screw driver on the oil pan I bet you will heat your noise there the last car I worked on with a loud knock sounded like it was in the center of the intake and it was a bad rod in the engine because the rods make knocks and it travels all the way up the piston and sounds like it comes from under the intake

How freely should the IMRCs move? It seemed that the passenger side moved freely. The driver's side seemed to have some resistance, although I could not get a good grip on the rod. Should I be pulling up on the rod or pushing down, with the engine off? I have not tried to move the with the engine running.

Get a Gosh DARN stethascope!!! Hoses DO NOT work because the sound resonates through everything. *sigh*

Stethascope equals answers so stop this guessing game and get **** handled! :D
