Did a search & can't find it though I know it's gotta be here somewhere - I'm NOT dropping the Tank & yes I'll be careful - 97 Base w/ 145K miles - Thanx in advance...

Welcome, Buck!!

There is no access panel, but there's some discussion of cutting a hole in a different thread.

I'm not going to paste that yet. :)

Dropping the tank isn't that hard. Put the back end of the car up on ramps, and disconnect the (presumably stock) exhaust from the hangers, and let it "dangle" This gets you a few more inches to work with.

Unbolt the tank, and let it rest on the exhaust. You should be able to reach on top of the passenger side of it, and remove the pump and basket assembly.

It's been years since I've done this, so I forget the exact procedure, but this, or something close to it, should get the job done.

Some good discussion on this is located here: http://www.lincolnsofdistinction.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?1862-fuel-pump

Now, if you're still interested in cutting your way in from the top, there's some talk about it here: http://www.lincolnsofdistinction.or...fuel-pump-changing-some-one-gimme-some-advice

Cutting into the floor with the tank still up is a bad idea. Personally i just cut the exhaust and dropped the tank in about 10min, only about $20 to have the exhaust rewelded that is of course if you cant just unbolt it.

Also when youre in there make sure you replace the whole basket with pump, after so many winters the check valve or plastic housing can give out

The added benefit of dropping the tank is you gain access to the drive shaft and it creates a good opportunity to replace the U joints.

It's quicker then cutting up the car and you won't make a new hole for noise and moisture to get in.

- I lucked up on the 97 & all I needed was Mustang FPDM XR3F9D372AE PN & not Fuel Pump - My 97 & 98 MK's had same PN but earlier AA version at end - On my 97 & 98 FPDM is on the outside of Passenger side Lower Trunk Hinge support behind the Trunk Liner - 2 10MM Nuts & one Connector - Plenty of cheap AD's & AE versions on Ebay - I bought an extra as IMO EVERY Gen 2 Owner should have a spare one of these in Trunk at all times~! - They are dying regularly now... 97 only has 116K miles so it appears TIME is what takes these out.

I would think you would "jump it out" right there at FPDM Connector if u wanted to Test for bad FPDM... It's my understanding that the FPDM changes Fuel Pump Speed unlike in Gen 1 - PLENTY of good used FPDM's on Ebay for $20 as they were on a jillion other Fords thru at least 2006 - & Again MK FPDM PN ends in -AA but the later -AE & -AD versions work fine.

Turns out I had run out of gas.I had put one gallon of gas in it when I broke down and it wasn't enough for the pump to pick it up.When I towed the car home the gas sloshed around to pick up.but my battery was dead.I took battery to Autozone had it charged and put in car,it fired right up.Whew ,dodged a bullet there. Thanks everybody for the comments.I know when it hits zero miles that I can go about 40 miles,I had pushed my luck there.

That's happened to everybody, including me - Real fun is when car is on left / right grade & it takes several gallons to hit pickup~! - I've had Fuel Gauge stick on MK's & other cars that "sat up" for awhile & then I ran them empty thinking I had 1/4 tank.

My old mark R.I.P wouldn't start on a grade like that with close to a 1/2 tank of gas. I remember the first time it happened was at a forth of July BBQ. I and some friends had to push it off the grade once it leveled out. She started right up. I wonder why the mark VIII's do that.
