Not bad ideas, I'm watching the power authority right now working on those two poles. New ones are up and lines are bing replaced. This has potential written all over it. Unfortunately I have nothing else to do so this is all the entertainment I got lol.

It's not worth the risk. I got enough gas today. By the time I got there it would probably have ended and I'd spend that gas going there and back

I just calculated that at 1/2 load (~10Kw) at my current NG rates it for running my generator for it cost me $39.46/day.

I also figure I pay on avg $8 a day for electric (a lot more in summer vs winter), so when the electric is out my electric bill will be less, makes the cost of operation a day around $31.46 more then I would normally pay for electric.

3,600 w portable that i just sold and it used 4 gal for 11 hr at 1/2 load, gas prices vary and i used it at more then full load, so lets say 4 gal for 8 hrs i was getting, so 12 gal a day at $3.70/gal by me is $44 per day.

Not having to stand on gas lines priceless.

I'm late to the party here. Working as a Project Manager in one of the few data centers in the area that stayed online we have been just a BIT busy... :D

My area survived pretty well compared to some places. We had A LOT of trees down but lucky the worst I got was a good size tree leaning against a tree in my yard. Figuring I'll deal with it in the spring if it doesn't fall by then :p We were mostly prepared for the storm but when the power went out we lasted a day before we packed up and went to her parents house. It's was mostly because of my 20 month old, even though not having water gets old fast. We got power back in 4 days but the other end of my block took 9 days.

My parents live in Barnegat on the lagoons but they were lucky enough to not get any water in their house although some others on their block did. My brothers house in Brick got 4+ feet of water in it :( He's in the process of gutting it now.

Hope everyone affected is OK now. I'm glad getting gas in NJ is no longer an issue!

I was talking to a Power Company employee that was up there and he was telling me how all the non-union companies from the south were on the way up to NY/Long Island and were called back because they weren't wanted!!! Way to go, NY! Hoffa is alive and well in NY! No wonder youse guys were without power for so long!

Actually it's based on partial truth. non-union crews were not turned away or sent back, they are here in force! HOWEVER... I was talking to a crew from Kentucky the other day and their complaint was that a lot of work that could be done in 2 days is taking a week because Union reps are forcing them to slow down and in some case stop work for short periods of time. This has been reported a lot so it's not rumor.

The crews are working very hard 24/7 and we're very appreciative but LIPA is a disgrace and needs it's status as a monopoly ended. We should be allowed to choose our supplier just like other regions do.

...no surprise. They wouldn't want all the people to see how productive non-union people are!

So i just got my natural gas bill, this year the avg temp was 2 deg colder, so not sure how much gas i used for heating, hot water, cooking and now i have a gas dryer this year vs what i used for the generator. My best guess is the generator coast me $21-$22 to run for a 24 hour period. Now if it was summer and i was running my central AC maybe it would be $40 a day. I know i was not running at 1/2 load so it is good to know that the generator consumes less NG when not under load.

I figure my avg electric runs me about $5 to $8 a day, so it is like $15 to $18more per day to run the generator.

Not a bad deal at all. $18/day is a small price to pay for keeping your family safe and comfortable.

I was thinking though. Does the generator offer any provisions for a back-up fuel source in case of natural gas infrastructure disruption? Can it be adapted to run on propane or anything?

The generator can run on NG or LP, just need to move a level with a tool they give you, issue would be to have a large LP tank.
Not that it can't happen, but we have never had an NG disruption here.
