RE: Old time entertainers...

Just curious..anyone here writing letters to their Senators about that horrid Patriot Act II erroding your freedoms? What's everyone's take on that one? I have read it, and if this was trying to be passed in Canada, I'd be sending 100 letters a day to prevent it...

Yeah, I am. Next up is getting Patriot Act 1 repealed outright. J. Edgar Ashcroft is a bigger enemy to freedom than Osama bin Laden could ever hope to be.

I find it disturbing that our government wants to pry into average Americans' most private affairs, yet they are constantly hiding more and more of their own activities from public scrutiny, all in the name of "national security". I can certainly understand the need for certain things not to be public, but some of the stuff they are hiding cannot be justified. For example, who attended Cheney's energy policy meetings. What does he possibly have to hide? Then you've got Ashcroft issuing memorandums telling his people to stonewall all FOIA requests. This is the most secretive and paranoid administration since Nixon, maybe worse.

Hey, isn't about time we move to a new thread? This one's getting a bit cumbersome.

Dave,

I need to argue with you, but not in a way you wouldn't expect. I happen to agree with a great deal of what you said. I just don't agree with your, "Democaracy Bad...follow the Constitution and I'll be happy" thought train. I always thought following the Constitution insured democracy.

I agree that everything should be left to the states, unless specifically addressed in the Constitution, or at least I think that's what you meant. I'm all for legalization of marijuana, the sooner the better. Pro Choice? In my mind that's the only choice there is. The woman should have ultimate authority over her own reproductive tract, not the government.

I wish I had more time, but I've got a doctor's appointment to get to. I'm curious about the effects of life's experiences on a person's outlook on things. I'm 56 (last month) and have lived through spectacular change, I can only imagine the changes that someone 25-30 years older than I am has seen.

Catch up with ya'll later.

Lee

Sleeper, Have you ever read anything from the Libertarians? They are trying very hard to be a legitimate 3rd party. If the politics here weren't so rigidly controled by the republicrats and the demoblicans, I thin kthe Libertarian ideas would gain a lot more traction than they have.

Lee, i put that in there to make people think, and I stand by it. Our constitution insures that we have a republic, which in modern times has been confused with democracy. A republic contains elements of a democracy, such as rule by the people, but adds an additional layer, which helps to ensure stability.

Constitution of the United States of America
Article IV
Section. 4.
The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened), against domestic Violence.

Republic: Authority is derived through the election of public officials best fitted to represent them. Attitude toward property is respect for laws and individual rights, and a sensible economic procedure. Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principals and established evidence, with a strict regard for consequences. A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass. Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobocracy. Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment and progress.
Military Training Manual TM2000-5, 1928

Democracy: A government of the masses. Authority derived through mass meeting or any other form of direct expression. Results in a mobocracy. Attitude toward people is communistic, negating property rights. Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate whether it is based upon deliberation or government by passion, prejudice, and impulse without restraint or regard to consequences. Results in demogogism, license, agitation, discontent, anarchy.

Some might consider it a matter of semantics nowadays, but it is an important distinction. For example in Iraq, if we put a democracy in place, it will lead to a theocracy, and nobody but the majority will have any say. A republic is more likely to ensure that the minority still has a voice in public affairs.

I am a huge fan of a third major party. Unfortunately Ross Perot put that movement back a couple decades. I still think the Silent Majority should be the party that rules. That is the one that is neither left nor right. It is the party that sits in the middle, the average American. Working for a paycheck, paying taxes. That is who should be in charge.

I may be blind, but I think I see a right hand turn there. There used to be a lot more right hand turns but that was on the Left Coast.

Looking for a fight Dean? ;-)

I don't watch NASCAR. Can't seem to tear myself away from the computer to actually spend some quality time with my TV anymore.

If you sign up at NASCAR.com, you can watch and listen to the races while 'gazing' at your computer. ;-)

Or, just buy a video card with a TV tuner. I could not live without mine.

There you go Sharon, an even better solution to watching the races.
