5 speed automatic (5R55S) in the Mark VIII?

The other day I was driving my wifes Explorer that has the 5 speed automatic in it. I got to thinking that they also put a 5 speed automatic in the Aviator which has the 4.6 DOHC. Were there ever any 2wd Aviators produced? Could it be possible to install the 5 speed auto (5R55S) into the Mark? I know that you would probably have to use the ECM from the Aviator so it knew how to run the extra gear. Any thoughts?

It would be a PAIN. You might as well install one of the add-on deals (forgot the name) that attach on the tail shaft and give you an extra overdrive.

There are ways to make anything work....its all about how much money you want to throw at it. :)

I suppose you are right. I have seen somewhere online about what you suggested. I can not remember the name of it either. I remember it being pretty expensive though.

YA thats it! I couldn't remember the name, lol.

I disagree because the 5R55's have a different bellhousing bolt pattern and are A LOT larger so there may be an issue with the transmission tunnel. After you get past all the mechanical/hardware issues, you have to worry about how to control the transmission. Sure you could just "run the Aviator ECU" but in all actuality, its not that easy. You don't just plug in a computer from another car and expect it to work. You'd have to run a stand alone computer set-up for the transmission, or make the transmission run on the Mark ECU.

It would be WAY easier to run a Gearvendor because they are controlled via a stand alone system so you can simply just add them on.

or put the aviator motor and trans in his car

I assumed it was the same since its a 4.6 dohc. I cant imagine ford making a totally different bolt pattern for the aviator. Although they have been known to strange things in the past.

Well the conti engine, which is 4.6L, has a different bolt pattern and those were made at the same time as the Mark. One can not assume all 4.6L engine have the same patterns. Most do though, but not all.

Isn't the Continental a FWD?

I have a gear vendor stand alone O.D. its about 3" larger in diameter than the tunnel. and unless you could shorten the tail housing on the trans.(they don't make an adapter kit for our trans.) it gets into the gas tank (wanted 4:11 and fuel economy I bought the O.D. from an estate sale a couple years ago)
