A hole in my thermostat?

Strange thing... I was told by the tranny shop that my thermostat was bad. My ride had been telling my I was low on coolant now and then even though it always appeared full in the overflow tank.
Anyway, I took the old thermostat out and boiled it on the stove and it seems to be working fine. Strange thing is, it has a hole drilled in it for some reason? The new one I got from Advanced Auto doesn't have this hole in it. Just to be safe, even though the old one seems to function fine, I installed the new one.

I haven't refilled the antifreeze yet or anything to see if the trouble goes away (hell, I may even have just been low on coolant after all who knows) but was wondering if anyone knew why the thermostat had a hole in it?

I understand the hole reduces trapped air.
