Air Silencer

What exactly does removing the air silencer do? This may be a dumb question but I'd like to know. Will it alter the performance of the car? Does it make the engine sound beafier under the hood or just louder? I know it won't idle with it off and not plugged. What is the best way to plug it?

"I know it won't idle with it off and not plugged. What is the best way to plug it?"

The one most talk about is just above the air ride compressor, before the air filter. You remove the air filter box and you can get to unbolting the silencer. You will have to remove the wheel well liner to get full access to it and slide it out. NOt a hard project at all. It will give the car a more aggressive growl. It sounds very nice but it will not increase performance dramatically.

The one you seem to be talking about is off of the intake tube above the engine. Its not really much of a silencer. You dont need to remove it. If you do, its easy. A 2" (maybe 2.5") rubber plumbing cap with worm clamp will seat it off perfectly.

I just finished removing the silencer and resonator and drilling the air box. It does sound a bit nicer now. Thanks for the instructions, they were VERY helpful. Now will this set off any codes on the scanner?

This is another thing I want to do to mine. Then again, I am going to sell it soon, so I may not even bother.

I'm wondering if anyone has thought of the idea to cut out all the holes in the air box and mount a screen instead. That should allow more air to flow, right?

The screen will restrict, why not just cut out the holes and be done? I think thats what many have done.

I haven't heard of anyone doing that. Wouldn't that allow for a LOT of debree to get into the air box? I suppose a screen wouldn't make much more of a difference than the holes.

Be aware that if you cut holes in the filter box directly into the engine bay, that you will draw in hot air warmed up by the hot engine, which will have a slight negative effect on the performance. Ideally pull more air into the filter from the fender well by a ram air tube of some sort, or try to find a path from in front of the radiator to the filter. Your engine will like the cooler air much better. Another option is to modify the air filter box, after cutting it open, by sealing the engine bay from the filter with a built up wall of some material, from the filter to the radiator support and form fitting(sealed) against the hood and fender.

I think I would agree here. The stock box is good as-is. The restriction is at the filter.

Is there a place where you can get this "built-up wall" or do you have to make one? How much does one of those cone filter set-ups cost? Does someone have a picture of one of those set-ups?

It is best to leave the stock air box alone unless you are going to go forced induction, head, cam, etc.
