Any installation guides for removing the radio in 01 Conti?

Over the weekend I am going to install CD changer in my wife's 2001 Continental. This requires me to run the wire from the console compartment to the back of the radio. I know how to remove parts of the console to run the wire but have no idea where to start to get the radio out (or at least get some access to it). The CD changer is compatible so once I get the wire near the back of the radio, it is just plug and play (hopefully).

Any guidance is appreciated as I do not want to break all those plastic parts :)

Thanks.

From what I read in the other thread, you said the radio was an Alpine? If so, its kinda tricky to get out.

It is the Alpine version of the Lincoln stock radio. It is not the Alpine aftermarket stereo.

In my F250, I have to pop loose the whole dash....it's a 2005, so it wouldn't surprise me if you do! The trucks have been that way since 2003 I think. The trucks don't follow the cars for a few years.....It actually isn't hard.

Same with my 96 Buick. The dash just pops out and in. Pretty cool and I haven't noticed any squeaks even with 12 year old car. Though Continental's dash looks like it is made out of more pieces than the Buick's one. I will try to get the dash apart tomorrow.

Like I asked before....is it stock or an Alpine like you said in the other post?

J: I did reply to your post. It is Alpine stock :) I have the Alpine version of the stock radio. I guess it is step above the regular stock and has Alpine label. This is not an aftermarket Alpine radio. It is just something Lincoln was selling as an upgrade I think.

Oh, lol, I missed it! Does the stereo have 4 square holes on the sides, 2 on the right and 2 on the left?

J: There are two holes on the right side but not on the left side. they are not square though (more like triangle/trapezoid). My dash is like this one.

I just removed the radio. It was actually pretty easy. Just needed to pull the plastic trim around it. The tricky part was that the trim was connected to another piece of trim on the left that had one screw. So it is all just pins with one screw. Fortunately I have spotted the screw before trying to pull the whole trim really hard :) The radio has just four screws (two on each side).

Anyway, now I have another problem. The cable does not fit (even the CD changer is specified to work with 98 and up Lincolns). I think I will have to splice the cable and come up with a homemade adapter.

WTF? Lol, not even close to what I pictured in my head.

Good job, sorry I couldn't help this time. See I was being lazy because I thought it was aftermarket, but had I jumped on AllData, I would have given you this.....

Disconnect the battery ground cable.
Remove the lower column cover.

Remove the center trim panel.

Remove the screws and pullout the audio unit.

OK. I got the CD changer installed (sort of).

The only problem I have now is how to get the cable from the back of the radio to the center console compartment. I was able to get the top panel of the center console open but I do not know how to reach the inside of the center console where the additional cigarette plug is. So I got the cable half way down and I am stuck now at the bottom of the cupholders. Any ideas or pictures?

Thanks.

J: I have the full center console (second chart that you provided). According to the picture you provided, I see that the top part just pops out like the other part of the console (around the transmission handle).

Thanks.

This is all I could find....I'm sure this will help a lot though. There is probably screws under that. In order to remove the shifter handle, there is a small U shaped pin towards the front of the handle. Use a small screwdriver to pry it out and the handle will pull off. :)

It helped me a lot. Thanks J. I was able to pull out the top of the console (around the shifter handle) and the top of the center console compartment. This was enough to route the cable for the CD changer.

Thanks again.
