Coolant Leak

Well my 96 Mark has began leaking coolant from the front of the crank where the harmonic balancer is. I am guessing that it might be a water pump. Any ideas? How difficult will this project be?

Thanks in advance

For the most part, easy.

The pump cam get stuck making it a pain to remove.

1: Drain coolant.
2: Loosen four bolts holding on pump pulley. 8mm or 10mm I think.
3: Remove belt.
4: Remove those four bolts and pulley.
5: Remove four bolts that hold pump on. 13mm I think.
6: Remove pump, may have to use a small breaker bar to pry it out gently.
7: Install new pump with NEW o-ring.

there are pry points on most pumps they have little tabs that you can get a pry bar under. just make sure it comes out straight and dont nick the alum. if there is any corrosion in the block take some fine sand paper like 400+ grit and get it off. then put a small amount of grease on the new o-ring not much just a light film to help it go in with out ripping. just push the pump in as far as you can then use the bolts to pull it in EVEN if you cock it to one side hard your done.

"....then put a small amount of grease on the new o-ring not much just a light film to help it go in with out ripping."

I will add if you do it MUST be silicone grease or you will have a disintegrated o-ring in a short time and be doing this all over again.

Or use synthetic brake grease; never petroleum grease for non-fuel o-rings.

Yeah, well, sure. But if you use coolant, how do you get grease under your fingernails? I mean heck. Someone may accuse you of not working on that motor, if you don't have something black and yecky under your nails.

It was a breeze to do. 10 bolts including removing the shroud and fan for easy access.

Coolant as a lube? Who would have thunk?
