I have to get another car in the next 2 days under $4000. I’m looking at a 98 Mark Vlll LSC with 165k miles and a 2002 LS V8 with 140K miles I prefer the mark but need a 4 door. To help me decision I would like to know about the LS motor and Trans. Is the motor just a shorter stroke / bore version of the 4.6 with cobra heads or is it a Jag motor, how reliable is the motor and Trans. any one had any luck with modificatins to the LS. Any opinion is welcome. I like the way the 2 cars look. PS are the heads on a 98 mark b or c heads?

Well the cars couldn't be more different.
Both cars have a lot of "issues" especially at that mileage. I'd honestly go for the newest/lowest mileage car i can get at that pricepoint.

And to answer your questions about the LS:
The V8 is the Jag V8, it has some coil/valve cover issues.
The transmission is a 5 speed auto that seems to be ok, but no service interval has been specified so no one serviced it... chances are its pretty worn by that point. I think the 98 Mark VIII transmission a bit more solid.

Couple of my buddys have owned the ls and had.so many problems timing chains broken coil and fuel injector issues bad trans and blowing up the motors not to mention all the electrical problem best advise stay far and clear from that car unless u have lots of money to spend

I Bought the 98 mark Viii yesterday. I did a lot or research on the LS and found out the cylinder sleeves are made of a Magneseum that high sulfur fuels deteriorate and I didn’t want to have problems getting parts. By staying with the mark Viii I can keep on track with my engine build and swop idea. I’ve got a Cobra blocked prepped and ready for new Manley pistons; I also have a cobra crank and have my eye on Manley H-beam Rods and I have a Cobra Intake. I may go ahead and install the intake on the current motor.
