DVC Subs

Ok, I found this on Infinity's website and was wondering how this actaully worked or if it was a typo:

"...The dual 4-ohm voice coil design allows you to wire your sub for high output (2 ohms) or for multiple subwoofer configurations (8 ohms)..."

I understand that when you wire something in series it is additive so 4ohm + 4ohms = 8ohms. But I thought that when something was wired in parallel it was the same and 4ohms + 4ohms = 4ohms. Please shed some light on this or correct me if I am wrong...

EDIT: For whatever purpose this is for 2 Infinity KappaPerfect 12.1d subwoofers. True SQL? It looks like it so far.

RE: DVC Subs

close but no cigar.

For resistance:

Series: 4+4=8

Parralell: 4+4=2; (1/4 + 1/4 = 1/2)

For capacitance it is the exact opposite. These two equations are used in fluid and in mechanical systems as well, you just have to know where.

RE: DVC Subs

thanks, i think my EE class is starting to come back to me now!

now i need to re-figure things. I want the amp (mono) to see 2ohms, which really isn't possible with (2) 4ohm DVC subs. I need to go with (2) 4ohm SVC subs or (2) 2ohm DVC subs it looks like.

thanks again

RE: DVC Subs

I wouldn't say true SQL, just true SQ. Those subs play great tight bass that sound great, but they don't have the SPL of similar models.

So what amp tickled your fancy? :)

RE: DVC Subs

i havent seen any numbers on them, but just experienceing. Maybe not 'true' SQL but awesome SQ and a decent amount of SPL.

Anyways, its not out yet and I am on a waiting list for it but...

Daht-tah-dah....

RE: DVC Subs

the best i could find those focals for was just a hair under $200 per sub, and that was only for their entry level 'Access' line. The sound was almost worth it. But with three of those wiring was going to be a bear, along with a big, clean amp to push them. I found the M1000 for $625 (only another $150 more than the Kicker 1200.1) and the 12.1s are about $130 - $140 a piece. So about $900 - $1000 after I have the box built and everything.

Im still roughing out my system though, I want to have everything I need before I start installing it. All I have so far is the head unit, CD changer and two rolls of Raamat60. Working on speaks and a 4 channel amp right now. The subs are kind of the last thing, I just want to decide so that I know everything will work together. Basically what im saying is that Im very open as far as bass goes right now. I really like the alpine amps, I have already used the smaller two(M300 and M500) and loved them.

RE: DVC Subs

damn your getting screwed on that alpine amp. They make good amps, but when your talking class D you will not hear a difference between the two, except that the kicker would get louder (1500 Watt birthsheets) The difference is def. not worth that much.

You can find a JBL 1200.1 for around $250 that will give you good solid power, and I can promise you you wouldn't hear a difference between the 2 (if you could a guy named richard clark, a stereo guru, will give you $10,000) As long as wattage is the same, they only way you could tell a difference between sub amps is if one is class D and the other is class AB. Even then it's minor.

The $400 you would save could get you a great set of speakers, which is IMO the most imortant key in the whole system, at least if SQ or SQL is your goal...

Maybe, but the Kicker only makes 600 watts at 2ohms where the alpine makes 1000 watts at 2 ohms. Thats 1000 very controlable, very accurate and very clean watts which I want, especially in a good SQ (main objective) system.

RE: DVC Subs

nope. it is either single 4 ohm or dual 4 ohm.

Im looking at that JBL right now. I like the sounds of it. Has anyone else had any experience with these??

Also checking out the Pheonix Gold Tantrum 1200.1. Class T ?? Anyone wanna help me out on that one?

RE: DVC Subs

The JBL is a decent amp, by far the best bang for the buck out there. They almost always test around 1300-1400 watts RMS. Like I mentioned earlier, when working with sub amps, you will never hear a difference between 2 amps of similar power. The only real factor is reliability and price.

I don't have a lot of experience with the Phoenix Gold, but Class T means different thigns to different brands. In it's true form, it has the efficiency of a class D, but can play the full range of music (class D can only ply up to around 300 Hz or so.) But many brands say their amp is Class T as a marketing ploy, much like MA Audio has their "Class X amps" etc. The Tantrum may be a true class T, I'm not sure, but for sub amps, class D will work fine. Don't pay extra if you're only going to use 10-200 Hz anyways. That is unless they are the same price, then tantrum all the way.

RE: DVC Subs

ok, i was thinking about this some more. What wiring sequnce will get me the most output at a 2 ohm load:

Subs are dual 2ohm

Wire the Voice Coils in parallel for a 1 ohm load per sub and then the subs in series for a total of 2 ohms or

Wire the Voice Coils in series for a load of 4 ohms per sub and then the subs in parallel for a total of 2 oms

RE: DVC Subs

"Please note that when wiring multiple drivers, whether DVC drivers or their SVC brethren, it is recommended that series connections between drivers be avoided at all costs. This does not include series connections made between voice coils on the same driver."

Also good information...

RE: DVC Subs

their reliablility is questionable at best, especially in their amps.I did have a set of rockford speakers in my last car that were VERY nice, but I have definitely upgraded since then...
