Ford Recalling 3.6 Million Vehicles to Deal With Concerns About Faulty Cruise Control Switch

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Ford Motor Co. said Friday it would recall 3.6 million passenger cars, trucks, sport utility vehicles and vans to address concerns about a cruise control switch that has led to previous recalls based on reports of fires.
Ford said the recall covered more than a dozen vehicle models built from 1992-2007. The company said it was responding to concerns from owners about the safety of their cars and questions about the speed control deactivation switch in the vehicles that is powered at all times.

The Dearborn, Mich.-based automaker previously had recalled nearly 6 million vehicles beginning in January 2005 because of engine fires linked to the cruise control systems in trucks, SUVs and vans.

"Customers remain concerned about the long-term durability of the speed control system and about the safety of their vehicles," said Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis.

He said the automaker had received "a few reports of fires" in Ford Crown Victoria passenger cars prior to the recall. He did not have a precise number.

The recall involves the following vehicles: 1998-2002 Ford Ranger, 1992-1997 Lincoln Town Car, 1992-1997 Ford Crown Victoria, 1992-1997 Mercury Grand Marquis, 1993-1998 Lincoln Mark VIII, 1993-1995 Taurus SHO, 1999-2001 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer.

Also covered are the 2001-2002 Ford Explorer Sport, 2001-2002 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, 1992-1993 E150-350 vans, 1997-2002 E150-350 vans, 1993 Ford F-Series pickups, 1993 Ford Bronco, 1994 Mercury Capri, 2003-2004 Ford F-150 Lightning, and 1995-2002 Ford F53 motor homes.

An additional 177,000 vehicles in Canada, Mexico and Europe are covered by the recall.

Owners will begin receiving recall notices on Aug. 13. Dealers will install a fused wiring harness into the speed control electrical system or replace the deactivation switch it its found to be leaking.

Owners with questions about the recall can contact Ford at (888) 222-2751.

Well, THAT was just a matter of time. I've been looking for this since the last set of autos to be recalled for the same thing. No surprise!

Yea I was about to post this... I know there were at least 3 incidents where it caught on fire... and posted on our forums.

The Ford link worked for me. My Mark VIII which was made the last day of regular production is on the recall list. Therefore, probably every Mark VIII is on the list.

I just checked my 94 Mark and it is on the recall list. They are saying that the cruise will be disconnected and the part may not be available until October. I really like my cruise control but I like my Mark raw and not well done much more!

Had it done my 98 F150 on the last recall. Just about takes longer to open the hood than it does to install the part. Didn't even get out of the truck, it was done right in the check-in line.

Cruise Control Recall Repair

Is this work done under the hood or in the steering column. I just had a major overhaul done on my steering column and would be concerned if the recall is done to the steering column.

My LMD said they will have the parts today. I'll confirm and swing by there tomorrow and get the fix.

I don't think that this is right.

Ford knows that the switches are prone to failing. They are going to put a fuse in, to hopefully keep them from catching fire when they fail.

So now, you might not get a fire, but the switch may still fail! This switch is part of the brake system and I think that this is still a major safety concern.

They say that they will replace the switch if it's leaking now. What about next week after they install the fuse?

I think that they should install the fuse and replace the switch that has been known to fail, wheather it's leaking now or not.

I talked to one of the guys where I work and he is a ford parts manager and said it would not be covered before or after the recall

Any idea how long I have to get my car in before I'll have to pay? I've never dealt with a recall before, so I've no idea how it all works.

Well, I knew that they'd fix it for free if there's a recall, but I didn't know if there was a time limit to it or not... like, say, 60 days from the announcement, after that you'd have to pay? But I assume if it was recalled, they fix it for free, bottom line, no holds barred, for the rest of eternity?

I took my "98 gen2 to the dealer here in Sacramento last week, nothing but class I was impressed, they disconnected the cc and told me to give them a call if I didn't get my letter by Oct. It's all free, covered by the recall, they heard about it , if your dealer says he hasn't ask them why, if we know they know.By the way to give credit the service advisor here is Darrin Needles.
