Gen 2 - Cobra Intake Swap

The IMRC Deletes and lower intake are now bolted and torqued in place. I need to get a smaller size Thermo-Tec Thermo-Flex to protect the new vacuum hose, wiring harness, and fuel rails from the EGR tubes. The lower (stock) EGR tube is insulated with HP Thermal Sleeving covered with a DEI Cool Tube Extreme, secured with DEI stainless steel locking ties. I taped the end of the connector for the IMRC controller and shoved it out of the way.

Two shorter 70mm bolts are needed for the rear of the Cobra lower intake (stock bolts on the right).

Tomorrow I'm going to tackle extending the wiring harnesses for the TPS, IAT, etc.

I have seen countless threads on the Cobra intake swap and this is one of the best! ;)

You will need that heat wrap though especially for the folks who decide to keep their IMRC plates operational as the cables will pass exactly through that area.

I don't think that there would be any issues with the IMRC cables using my EGR extension tube. The Stock EGR tube is in essentially the same place as it was before the swap, behind the bracket that the cables pass through and that the controller bolts to.

Yeah, it looks like it will be ok, the wrap is a must though ;)

Quick question about the PCV intake hose. Don't you think the reduced hose size might cause any build up inside the valve cover ?
The 03-04 cobra hose (that plumbs in the front of the cover) is the same size as the mark viii hose (in the rear).

I've thought about that, however the forward fitting on the Cobra intake tube is only 1/2" OD (even though the other end is 3/4"), so there's not too much of a difference. Time will tell.
 
Didn't get much done on the swap today, I'm waiting for my EGR tube and the cross-over tubes to return from Jet Hot.

Removed the left inner fender and cruise control servo and cable. I've got a '98 Cobra cruise control cable that will connect to the stock servo.

Removed the stock throttle cable and installed the '98 Cobra throttle cable, which is JUST going to be long enough.
 
I hated that when I did the swap on my old 95 M8.

Not sure if the 01-04 cable mounts differently to the bracket, but it was plenty long on the WL.

Yeah, I'm going to look into later Cobra cables to see if any will work better.
 
Did a little of the wiring today. I had a broken/missing clip on the TPS connector, so I bought a new pigtail to use during the extension.

I also noticed that the COP harness on the passenger side looked like a great way to collect water, so I filled it with silicone.

A test fit of the Cobra fuel rail revealed that the inlet tubes needed to be tweaked a bit to clear the valve cover. The hump for the PCV inlet doesn't exist on a '96-'98 Cobra valve cover.

Interesting. How hard were they to correct? Did you just bend the mounting tabs or bend the tubes themselves?

Pretty easy actually, I bent the tubes up and forward a bit. I used scrap pieces of aluminum rod that were as close to the ID of the tube as I could find, being careful not to scratch the inside of the tubes.

Got my parts back from Jet Hot today. :D

Almost time to start putting things back together, still waiting on some cool tubes and ARP bolts.

BTW, If anyone needs o-rings for the crossover tubes, I have a bag full.

Anyway....did you send the crossover tube to Jet-hot also? Interesting...wouldn't have thought of that. How do they charge for stuff? Do they have to see the items first, and then give you a quote, or what?
Wanna stick some of those o-rings in the box with the Russell fittings?

$20 per foot for tubes less than 3" in diameter. Not cheap, but the tubes are coated inside and out.

Sorry, your fittings are already gone. :wink:

Is there a disadvantage to using an aftermarket fuel rail? I've got a set of aftermarkets, and also a cobra fuel rail. I haven't figured out which I'm going to use yet...

Not that I can think of. I've got an Aeromotive p/n 14104 '96-'98 fuel rail that I'm planning to install on my Cobra a bit later, maybe I'll take it out and have a look. It would mean having to use a seperate fuel regulator and do quite a bit of plumbing and wouldn't be necessary on a N/A motor, but I'm sure that it would fit.
 
Made my fuel lines today. The trick to installing the -6AN Aeroquip socketless hose is using plenty of their hose lube and heating the end of the hose with a heat gun prior to installation.

My feed line is 28", the return line is 37" (YMMV).

Reinstalled the crossover tubes. I've decided that the alternator support will look better in a color other than black, so it's off the car being painted using the same hi-temp aluminum paint that I've used on the throttle cable bracket and the DPFE sensor and bracket that you can see on the rear of the upper manifold.
