I was thinking the.other day that im probably gonna be in the market for a cheap easlily mod-able, non daily dtiver car one day (hope fully soon).
Now first thing that comes to mind is a fox body mustang however still being relatively young my insurance would be.outrageous on.something like that. Then I remembered why I got the Mark VIII in the first place, while having an engine much like that of a very fast, high insurance car, its not. In fact, its a lot nicer than the Cobras of the day.
So why not a Mark VII? From what I remember they were actually built on the mustang platform and there are lots of fox body aftermarket parts.
What do you guys and gals think?

I would steer away from a 7, hydro boost brake failures, air suspension failures, AODe failures, and crappy interior quality. Not Mustang platform, just Mustang drivetrain.

If you're thinking something like that...get the same era Tbird, no air suspension or brake issues. Same transmission though.

Or....buy yourself something else smaller, and put a 5.0 in it. Cheap insurance, fast car.

For what its worth....get a quote from your insurance company on a 90 Mustang GT as your weekend car, I bet its no more than 500-600 a year, expecially if you're not going to drive it more than 2500 miles a year.

As J said take a look into the insurence to se how much you would have to pay.But as far as cheap and fast? It depends on how fast you would plan on going and how soon you would like to get there.

A 5.0 Mustang is with out a doubt the cheapest when it comes to mods.Actually any mustang really. But the Fox Body Stang is not only cheap but also the lightest. If you would like to be different look into anything that is built of the Fox Platform like a 80-88 T-Bird or a Fairmont. What fits in the Mustang fit in those.

I had two Mark VII's (89 and 92) before getting my 98 LSC. I put a 5 speed from a crashed Mustang in the 89 (when the tranny went) along with Flowmaster exhaust. It was kinda awkward to drive after but hey... The 92 had Flowmasters too and droned something fierce :D They were fun but can't compare to the power, ride, technology, and comfort in the 98. I say get a cheap Mark VIII (whatever year) and put a few bucks into it to make it your own.

Well, maybe a third then. Ill have to get a quote. Thanks folks.

I have owned 6 89-97 T-birds. 5 of them Supercoupes. I assure you, they dont hold a candle to a Mark VIII. And they arent much lighter either. And they still have many of the same types of failures. As was said, You may as well buy a cheap Mark VIII and put a few bucks into it. Go to http://www2.jaxed.com/cgi-bin/mash.cgi to find a cheap Mark VIII. That site is a compilation of all the Craigs lists across the nation.

But I really wanted a 302 since the aftermarket is so huge. It doesn't need to be nice, just fast.

My '86 Town Car has a 302. :D And they can most definitely be had cheap. Fast, it is not.. reliability can't be beat though. I'm at 330,000 miles..

86-91 should get you the TPI EFI 302

Towncars don't come with the "roller" motor though, maybe the tbirds either?

I wasn't aware of the difference (or existence) of the "roller" motor until just now. Thanks, J, (and Google)

I suppose there's not much point in trying to "upgrade" mine at this point. :)

There's no more in a Mark VII to stay away from than there is in a Mark VIII.

I've known of a few fast Mark VII's and they are cheaper to mod than any Mark VIII.

But why have a 7, when you can have a 8...

I mean... it one more... and that's better... :D

Fast is all im going for here. If o.can have something besides the mustangs a lot of people have that's a plus.

So mark Vii and fox bodys do have the same 5.0?

Correct me if im wrong but the 5.0 liter has a better power/money ratio when compared to the 4.6 as far ad modifications go.
