Help with CE Code??

Help!!! :(

The AutoZone guy said my CE code was PO420 "Bad Catalyst Efficency (Bank 1)" What does that tell me?? Bad Cats??

The car is missing and running bad......mostly under light accelleration, but also small miss at idle. When it misses, it sounds like a burp or belch! (Sorry.....that is what it sounds like)

I have changed to all new plugs, replaced two Coil Pack Boots that were cracked/broken, just put on new mufflers, and put on a new PCV on too. I'm having a new fuel filter put on Sat. I also am planning on an "X" pipe to replace the third cat/res.

BTW it sounds like BB's or small gravel is in the exhaust pipe between the drivers side front cat and the third cat.....Is this possible the cause of the CE? Could it be some trash in-between the front and third cat (flying around) that is setting the O2 sensor off and giving me the CE? (I can hear the trash in there every time I rev the engine while I'm stopped) If so, has it clogged the third cat?

I had bought two new high flow cats and went to get them installed, but the shop guy saw the drivers side was an integral part of the manifold and said he could not do it.

Please HELP!!! What do I try next????

Sorry so many ??'s but I am at my wits end on this one :(

When all else fails..........ask the experts!!

Thanks, Joe

RE: Help with CE Code??

Check the spark timing and see if it may be retarded below the normal setting. If it is, exhaust gas temperatures may increase which could decrease the efficiency of the catalysts. Just a thought before you spend all the money to replace the cats.

RE: Help with CE Code??

You would need to use a timing light. After some reading, I am thinking you probably shouldn't be doing that if you have a CE light on...the ECM might retard the timing if it is getting bad signals from a bad sensor....so...forget I told you that :)

RE: Help with CE Code??

Cut the exhaust after th cat and again about a foot downstream. That will give you enough room to gut the cats.Get a long piece of steel and start banging that crap out.Once you get them both done have the piece you cut out welded back in.Or you can remove the entire exhaust from the cat back and then bang them out and then reinstal the exhaust.
