HID Conversion......What is all needed?

BIG ROLLER

formerly K.B.R.
I am looking into doing the conversion to my '93 Mark and am not sure what is all needed.

First let me correct myself that '97-'98 Mark's come stock with HID's?

I called a friend that works at a salvage yard and to see if there is any chance that they may have any Mark VIII's there. She has not got back to me yet as they have a few yards and she is making some calls.

I just want to make sure that I get evrything needed if she can find them or if I find everything somewhere else.

If not from a salvage yard where is a good place to buy the conversion kit?
How much should I expect to pay?
What all needs to be done?

Not much to it. You need the complete housing with bulbs, and the ballasts. I have seen them for sale here and on the auction site from time to time. Usually listed for about $500+.

The Gen1 HIDs were released on late '95 LSC models and on '96 LSC models. They were rare and pricey but a magnitude better lighting solution for the Gen1s.

You need the HID lamp housings, HID bulbs and ballasts. Two of each, one for each side.

All the parts are obsolete and no longer available except used or the rare private party that may have them new in the box.

Thanks Driller.
If I am not lucky to find a GEN1 LSC than everything from a GEN2 will work?

The ballasts and bulbs are all the same - though you need to use the Gen1 headlamp housings, as obviously you cannot use the Gen2 headlamp housings.

The number one obstacle will be the headlamp housings. IF you can find them, you can use the aftermarket HID kits. You would only need adaptors for the different style HID bulbs. Someone else will have to chime in on them as both my cars have the OEM HIDs.

I recently put an aftermarket HID kit in my Denali, and I used Retro-Solutions brand slim digital kit for my 9005 bulbs, I got the 4300K color temp bulbs since they are closest to what factory OEM use for HID bulbs. It seems to work well for me so far and their customer suport has been great via e-mail for an issue I had with my install. I picked them based on other rievews of their HID kits I had seen on the web, they are not the cheapest out there. You can get them directly from them or on Ebay. They also have a lifetime warranty on bulbs and ballasts.

Someone else said they have used HID kits from VVME. There are a lot of different brands and prices out there, do a seach on Google or Ebay. I guess you need to do your own research on how you feel about the cost versus quality and reliability of the systems, lots are really cheap Chinese made stuff. It could work well, some better than others, or it could be total garbage and die on you. Only you can decide!

If you happen to run across anyone making an adapter for the 9500 bulb to D2S, let me know. I'm planning for the future when the HIDs go in my '98...lol

Thanks bsaco.

The thing is I don't know much if nothing when comes to electical. The HID conversion is all new to me and I don't know all the differences with the standard bulbs and the HID's.That and all the different types of HID's,housings etc:
I would like to learn all that I can.

You can do fine by just getting a new set of Halogen housing....or a good used set, and then buying a ebay HID set retro kit.

Thanks guys.I haven't talked to my friend to see if she found anything but I should.I'll also do some ebay searching.

If there is any questions that I might have missed I'll try to remember. And maybe you guys can let me know if I might have missed any also.

doesnt dlf make adapters?

I sold the bulbs out of my 97 and got 200 for em. Bought a 50 kit on ebay and 25 dollar adapters from kk on lvc..came out on top and have a brand new hid setup.

I basically did the same. Had one OEM HID bulb burn out, sold the other good one on ebay for 125, then bought an 85 dollar kit on ebay (still works great) in the 9005 size, and I used a hard plastic (actually, it was an impeller guard for an old SeaDoo XP jetski.. lol) and cut it so it would adapt the 9500 style OEM HID bulb, to a 9005 Bulb. Still works great, after about a year. :D

Having trouble finding anything around here.

If I am able to find just the housings from a '95-'96 LSC,would buying the kit from VVME work?

You can use HID's with your original housings, it will work just fine. It just wont be as good with the clear housings. the 95 - 96 LSC housings are hard to find, and if you do find them, they are quite expensive!

If you use the HID bulbs with the standard lenses in the 93-96 Marks you will be blinding oncoming drivers. They are NOT approved for use with those standard lenses.
