Bud, I have TONS of room on my other hards drives. You cans just copy past an operating system like you're implying. AND...I have already deleted everything. These stupid service packs are filling the hard drive up with every update.

As far as cloning, never thought of that. My worry would be the software authentications and issues with my 10 year old windows XP.

Mike, thanks for that, I'll look into those folders.

My main issue right now is iTunes music library. I have iTunes on a different hard drive but it seems to need to copy all the back ups (and a copy of my 1400 songs) onto the C drive every though the program isn't there. :(

That's Apples way of messin' with you... :p

Just go buy a mac... :p
+1

I have the perfect solution for you! It involves 4 very important steps.
1. Take your PC to the garage
2. Get the biggest hammer you own
3. Proceed to bash the hell out of your PC
4. Go here http://www.apple.com/ and get you a computer that will last you for the next 10 years. :D:wave:

But seriously there is an option to change the folder of your iTunes library and an option to not import every song that's played.

J, cloning works very well. I use cloning as my back-up. I can boot from either hard drive too. There are cloning programs out there free for downloading......If I were home, I'd give you the name of the one I use. It was so dependable, I ended up BUYING the expanded program. I'll be back home Sunday night and will let you know if you wish......

Or you could probably just run ccleaner, which I think does all of this for you. :D

The cleaner will do all that and more. Also XP is sold old i can't remember but it think it has restore points, remove all of them except the last one. The next thing to do is put the swap file on one of the other HD.

Thanks for all of the help guys! :) I have some work to do...or I'll just get a hammer. :)

J: check the following, and delete all of their contents if you haven't done so already. it should buy you some time.

c:\windows\temp
c:\documents and settings\[your username]\local settings\temporary internet files
c:\documents and settings\[your username]\local settings\temp

windows\temp had 2.5 gig.
Local\temp had 500 meg

What about the "Application Data" folder? It has 9.8 gig in it! That's almost half my hard drive!

Don't delete that...it's all the data from your apps......however, it can be "MOVED" to another drive. NOT copy/paste, "MOVE"!

If I move it how will my computer know where it went? There's no difference than if I just deleted it.

When you 'move' files, the indexes are updated so the apps "should" know where the data resides (assuming they follow proper protocol).

But seriously, cloning is easy and has never failed me. I use Acronis True Image for HDD backups and cloning chores.

That's why there IS a different command....move and copy/paste are way different....windows will reassign its "memory" where the file was "moved" to, as JP says.

That's done in the Windows registry. So IF the program follows typical Windows protocol, the registry entries for the program data files are updated with the "move" command. But you may find old versions of some programs do not play so well.

I would probably advise against the "move" option. Application Data is important enough, that I simply wouldn't trust windows to get it right. Moving the "my documents" is a different matter entirely, but if memory serves, you already have that on a different drive/partition..

The "clone," (also known as "image") option folks here are suggesting is a viable option, given the right software. Norton's "ghost" is probably the most popular commercial product, but as mentioned above, many free options are available.

Here is the one I have used in the past: http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm

The procedure would be to use a program like that to make an "image" of your current hard drive onto a new, larger drive. (getting the right drive is a different discussion.. SATA? or IDE?) Once the new drive is ready, you would remove your current primary drive, and stash it someplace safe. boot off the new drive, and you *should* be in business. (and if not, swap in the old drive again, and cary on..)

I wouldn't worry about the windows activation stuff. even if it does recognize this as a "significant configuration change," you just call the number, and yell at a computer for about a minute before they concede defeat and let you move on with your life. (I have dealt with this dozens of times.)

Option B of course, would just be to get the aforementioned gigantic hard drive, slap it in, and do a clean install. It will take longer, but you will have a new computer when you are done. you will have none of the "cruft" that your computer would have accumulated over the years..

Well, I think I may do option B. :) Or just build an entirely new one. Everything in mine is over 5 years old.

Haha thought about it. I DO love my iPhone. I'm gonna buy some glasses for sure.

What about the LoD flags?
