More power?

It's never to soon to start thinking about what's next and when I ask myself that question I come up with a IDK? lol

Current Mods are:

SCT tune
Cobra Intake
5sp.

Thats all the major things that I can think of.

But I'm at a loss as to what to do next.

I still have the "stock exhaust" Is there any worthwhile power to be picked up there by upgrading to 2.5in pipe and putting an X in?

I plan on adding 3.73's and a t-loc in this winter and no I won't go any higher of a gear.

The main 2 things I am considering is centrifugal sc or just doing the N/A thing and adding cam's

I would like to keep a budget of $2500 on one the above 2 things and I just believe that it will be way to hard to get the forced induction done for that price.

Are the cams worth it without head work? Or is that almost a must?

Im just starting the research phase and trying to gather info... You don't have to spoon feed me everything but if you could point in the right places to look I would greatly appreciate it.

My opinion(s)...

  • Cobra exhaust manifolds
  • True dual 2-1/2" exhaust with X-pipe
  • Electric water pump
  • Underdrive crank pulley
  • Colder plugs
  • 160 or 180 T-stat
  • Dynotune

Heads and cams will be big budget items. I wouldn't bother with cams unless the heads are ported and the valvetrain is upgraded.

Brake upgrades and suspension work should follow... ;)

I had given serious thought to the first 1 on the list, But I let a friend talk me out of them. His arguments were that the stock manifolds should flow ok enough for what I was going to do, and a boosted application they would be at there limit but they should be fine....Idk if I believe him 100% but with the work involved I had kinda shelved the idea for the time being.

#2 is something I know I should prolly do but I have a hard time thinking about doing it because I love the exhaust sound that I have now and I'm afraid that changing the pipe size will alter it to something I like less. But maybe it would be that bad. It is also prolly best to do this in conjunction with #1 that way I can have it all done at the same time...

Maybe these two along with 3.73's will be my winter projects....

Hadn't given much thought to the rest of the list other than a dyno tune. But I bet there might be 10-15 hp to be picked up with that stuff...a decent gain for a little bit of work..

The brake work has been done with cobra calipers up front and suspension work has been started with Koni adjustables in the rear

A good dynotune should gain that much itself over a canned tune.

The exhaust and Cobra manifolds will help because you already have the better intake. I bet it would surprise you what a good free flowing exhaust would do for you.

The car will sound different with the true-dual exhaust and will definitely sound different with the Cobra manifolds.

Log manifolds icky. Get headers and a crossover pipe. The stock exhaust is garbage too. I gained about 20+hp just from full exhaust with Kooks headers. The cobra manifolds would be your next best bet and probably more cost effective. Kooks headers will cost you almost 800 bux. The mufflers I run are 84 bux each over at SCP. They look really good but at that price I'm sure there are better ones out there. I wanted a luxurious touch at the tail and might have sacrificed sound quality in doing so, but I don't run cats or anything in between but an x-pipe so it's extremely harsh sounding anyways. It's all personal preference really. Some chose to run high flow cats and a resonator to soften it up a bit. We have no emissions here which is why I went my route. Either way, the exhaust can be pretty tame even with headers as long as you retain your cats and resonator. You'll see less gain that way but it will still be worth it. Especially if you don't want to get pulled over for loud exhaust. :p

It's not a "canned" tune per say. It matches my mods and Lonnie and I talked about it and he didn't think a trip on the dyno wasn't worth it yet. he thought he could get it close enough for my application.

Would love to have real headers just dont thing there worth $800 when I can get 03 manifolds for $100ish..

When I first got a chip from Lonnie, I was told the same. I gained ~15 RWHP with the first SCT dynotune by JW. It can be done. But I guess I would've hated to pay $400 for a smaller gain.

For the money, I agree on the Cobra manifolds. Since the '93 has the Kooks headers, I couldn't justify a 2nd set for the '96, so I just used the Cobra's. I have considered a set of custom longtubes for the '93 though and hand the Kooks down to the '96. :D

Use the 03/04 manifolds.
There is a difference.
A member here was selling new in the box.

I might know of a set that will be available, waiting on a shipment of goodies.
I have both laying around if you want port numbers.
I will sell the 99s I have for $50.

You might want use IMRC delete plates, re-tune.
If you don't like go back to old tune, re-install plates.
After all you can "pick" your rpm ;)

you can get 03/04 manifolds for $50 shipped. Search/post the mustang and SVT boards.

As far as the work goes.......you installed a freakin stick!. Installing manifolds should take you an afternoon.

JP....what dgains do you think just the foloowing mods would provide?

Electric water pump
Underdrive crank pulley
Colder plugs
160 or 180 T-stat

The colder plugs and T-stat will allow more timing without the knock sensors pulling back, so they would not be so much of a gain but insurance against a loss of HP due to timing being pulled.

The underdrive crank pulley will allow the motor to accelerate faster which will yield some low end grunt. The electric water pump takes away the high end parasitic losses from the water pump which will help on the top end. Together I think they would give somewhere between 5-10 HP across the full rpm span with 5HP down low building up to around 10 HP at peak HP rpms.

Doesn't seem like a lot but the little things begin to add up to make a difference. ;)

My answe is turbo, or nitrous both work good one just works better but cost more. Every one else already said what I would have said.

I've read that the water pump is worth 8-12hp alone but I know that doesn't always hold up. Defiantly looking into this stuff. Thanks for the info :)

I haven't found many of them for that price on the boards but I'm not saying there not out there.

As far as the installation goes. I know it could get done but I am far from a master mechanic. First off I bought the 5spd from a friend that already had it in a Mark VIII. So all the hard work was already done. I just had to install it, but during the installing I had the help of 6 or 7 people along the way including the friend that sold me the stuff...

any recomendations on choosing an underdrive pulley and electric water pump?

Steeda... 031-D0030230000 - Underdrive Pulley - 4.6L - $169.95

If you're not in a hurry, I will have the Steeda crank pulley from my old motor after the new one is installed.

Meziere electric water pump... 621-WP346S - Meziere Electric Water Pump - Black - 4.6L - 96-09 - $359.95

I think Summit also has the Meziere electric water pump.

Idk if who this was aimed at but I'd be interested :D lol

LOL, I guess it could be sold to the highest bidder! Lord knows I need to recoupe some investments. :D

You could own a piece of Mark VIII history!
