My mark died today...

Pauls dropped 8

well, today i performed my 1st oil change ever. drained the fluid and drained the oil filter. replaced the oil filter and tightened it as much as i could with my hand (wouldnt budge anymore). filled the car with 6 quarts of mobile one 5w30 synthetic oil. im not sure but i think the old mechanic used to fill my car with 10w30. during my first drive after this everything was fine. seemed the car was running better actually. on my way home, i was going my usual route behind a slow moving car uphill. when the car finally turned, i went to hit the gas and nothing happened. i didnt hear the engine running and saw the battery light on. i threw it into park and and started it right back up. it ran just fine for the rest of the day.

why the hell did my car do this?

RE: My mark died today...

I don't know, Paul - but I can tell you that just yesterday I took my Caddy out for the first time this year, and drove it 12 miles. At appox. 8 miles into the drive, after going up just a slight hill, reaching the top, stopping for a stop sign, as I pushed the gas to go, she died, all idiot lights illuminated RED, I put the car in neutral and turned the key & she fired right up. I finished the 12 mile run and it did not happen again! I have a feeling it has something to do with the mixing of the special formula gas sold pre-winter and the non-formulated stuff being sold now, only because I gassed up at the ride's start. She never did that before. It seemed like for a moment she was gas starved.
I used her today, as well, and did not have that problem. Maybe you won't either, tomorrow.....

RE: My mark died today...

My car has been doing more of that lately. It'll just stall as i'm slowing down. I can start it right up and keep going though. For me it's probably either my tune (the t/c may not be unlocking fast enough when i slow down) or my IAC. Mine was doing it last year too.

RE: My mark died today...

Years ago I had a car that suffered this problem, it was vapor lock. Can that still happen in modern cars?

RE: My mark died today...

That was quite a scare, Paul.

The title of your post, "My Mark died today...", then you start talkin' 'bout an oil change. I was thinking you would tell how you lost oil pressure and locked up the engine or something along those lines. :B

RE: My mark died today...

Nope, my mark stalls out sometimes when I slow down very fast and make a U turn. Just start it up and it drives fine.

Ditto! That was exactly what I was thinking!

I have had a similar thing happen on numerous occasions when I floor it all of a sudden. I can ease into the throttle and it'll move out fine, but when I punch it, it hesitates. It has never happened consistently, so I never looked into a solution, but it would be nice to figure out what causes it. I have a Superchip in my car, maybe it is chip related???

RE: My mark died today...

Its your charging system, My guess maybe a bad connetion or low battery, disconect your battery, and charge it. and clean the grounds really good along with the terminals

RE: My mark died today...

I think Brad's correct!!:)
Here's why. The Caddy had a dead battery (per usual) and I didn't feel like doing a 3 hours charge, so I just jumped it, got it running, and left on the ride. Battery was very weak. After the ride I hooked it up to a trickle charge for 6 hours. The following day the sudden stall did not happen.
Good guess, Brad!!!
Paul charge the battery on trickle for 6 hours.

This sounds like a fuel filter issue . . .

Sandy, I notice you don't have a SVO in your collection . . . .
I've got one for sale.

Sorry. Out of money for cars, as I am supporting a New Jersey University at $30,000 + a year, as well as being flat out of garage space. 2 in home garage, 2 "away-from-home" in rentals, and one in the driveway, 90% of the time either wet from rain, or under snow. Next year looked promising, as he goes on full scholorship, but my wife wants a new kitchen, a new bathroom, the bedroom re-done and Lord knows what else. I sadly think my car-buying days have passed by. I am buying lottery tickets, now-a-days, for future automotive funding :D

Something like that happens to me - everytime I get gas without resetting the computer, I am lucky to make it 5 minutes from the gas station without stalling! Did you by any chance just get gas prior?

RE: My mark died today...

I am a newbie so please bear with me. I just bought a 1998 Mark VIII Base model a month ago with 92K on it. The car flies and I love it but when I first got it I would punch it and stop fairly quickly and it would idle very roughly. It smooths out once I drive it a bit.

I then got the plugs changed, engine fogged, and the fuel injectors cleaned and it has not done it. I have only had one chance to test it so maybe it will do it again. The one time I puched it and stopped quickly it idled slightly rough but nowhere near as bad as it did before the work was done. Sounds like maybe I did not need all of that work.

Any ideas are appreciated.

I am not rich enough for a divorce. My friends who have gone down that road say one needs 2 million in the bank to afford such, comfortably. Besides 2 of the cars are in HER name. Bye Bye Caddy...Bye Bye Silver McLaren. Besides, she tells me that I'm happily married :+

I really think the IAC is the problem on most Mark VIII's stalling. My 93 has a bad IAC. I have to warm it up in the morning for 5 minutes before I can drive it. If I had a second Gen, I'd change it, but the 1st gen is very hard to change.
