Removed front air silencer = better idle?

As the title suggests, I removed the air silencer (under the front bumper) when I replaced my air compressor. Ever since, my car has idled much smoother. Not sure if there's a cause and effect relationship there - has anyone else has experienced this?

My Mark must like the extra airflow. :)

It'll take a little while for the computer to figure out how to idle rough again. :+

RE: Removed front air silencer = better idle?

Funny - I've always felt my car idled smoother BEFORE I had the air silencer removed.

RE: Removed front air silencer = better idle?

When I first got my '93, I don't know how many times I couldn't tell it was running, it was that smooth and quiet. Luckily for the flywheel, I finally got into the habit of looking at the tach. :7

RE: Removed front air silencer = better idle?

If the IAC is of the "rubber baloon" design, it could be that the baloon has a slight tear in it which only leaks when the baloon is in a certain position...kind of like our suspension does when it springs a leak. Taking the silencer off reduces the idle vacuum (ever so slightly) thus holding the IAC in a slightly different position to maintain the same idle rpm.

Of course I could be totally wrong... :7

Hmm - interesting replies, everyone.

Here's another theory - my car has always idled smoother in cold weather than in hot. The weather has cooled off considerably since I removed the silencer. Guess I'll have to wait until next July to rule out Mother Nature as the culprit! :)

Could be your throttle body to intake tube was leaking slightly before you removed the air silencer, and you fixed it when you re-installed it. No apparent reason why it would idle better without the silencer.
