removing the air silencers

What he said.. lol. In a nutshell, tho? It gives you more of a throatier sound when you hit the throttle. Nothing much else.

Prevents hydrolock
Edit: wait is the slilencer different than the snorkel?

Thanks for the awesome link J, I got "sorry no matches" lol.

If it's what I think you are referring to, the car sounds better without it but I noticed my car afterwards didn't idle as smoothly as it used to with the silencer on. Nothing drastic, just went from not knowing if the car was actually running at a stop, to knowing, but just barely.

Is there any gain by removing them and does the cone filter help performance on the mark VIII

Like this?

In hindsight, maybe more throttle response, but you do need some type of heat shield from the engine compartment.

My 'cone filter' is now in the fenderwell for a more true CAI.

That is debatable unless there is a before and after on a dyno, and even then if there was any gain it might not be able to accurately measure it. I have never seen a car pull exactly the same numbers on a dyno, that is not to say it never happens.
A long time ago this was debated as well and it was said that the stock intake was rated for much more HP then could be made with a stock set up. Only when you go to s/c etc did the intake come into play.

exactly, I hydrolocked mine because I did this dumb modification, don't do it and don't drive through big puddles

NO...it was you driving through the puddle that did it, not the modification.

There is good reason to remove the snorkel part under the inner fender. It will make replacing your air compressor so much easier. It also adds a bit of a sound effect to. I left the stock air filter in place, and left the big hole thru the fender. This is on my DD. Like others I then plugged the large hole where the resonator was on the intake tube.
