Reverse to Drive Hesitation

Could someone remind me what causes the hesitation when shifting into drive from reverse on a '93 MK VIII and what can be done to fix it?

There's some hesitation going into reverse from park as well.
 
Usually that's a symptom of low pressure. It could be a pump issue or a blockage/leakage of some sort in the valve body.
 
I just had it put in. It's a used tranny with about 100,000 miles on it. I got it for $100.

Works a lot better than the previous one though. It too had some hesitation even after a rebuild.

My old one has a fairly new valve body in it but I figure it might be compromised after 3rd and 4th gear went out. The fluid was black almost. I was thinking of puting it, the valve body that is, into the new one to see what it would do. Also doing the accum. upgrades while at it.
 
Low fluid level will do this too...but I'm gonna go on a limb and say that would be too easy, lol.
