RE: Satelite radio?

When I do my stereo, I plan on putting one in. Are you using XM or Sirius?? What brand receiver are you usung also??

RE: Satelite radio?

I went with sirius.I hear they have beter programming. And I have heard of xm cutting out.
I went with a kenwood reciever setup and used an FM modulator to tap into the factory system.
I got the whole setup for 130 bucks out the door.

RE: Satelite radio?

I question if a satillite system is worth $15-20 a month.

I figure thats a cd or two a month.

RE: Satelite radio?

The xm is 10 bucks and sirius is 12.95 and if you pay for a tear in advance you get the 12 month free.
It is definately worth it.

RE: Satelite radio?

Has anyone else had these troubles with XM?? I want to go with a alpine powered system (which runs XM. But overall sound quality is more important to me.

RE: Satelite radio?

Last time I checked, XM had commercials, and Sirius didn't. That alone, to me, is worth the 3 extra dollars per month.

RE: Satelite radio?

I have xm, some channels have commericals, some don't. even with sirius I believe. I only listen to rock/metal, so theres only about 2-3 stations that are good. however the cost of buying the alpine xm reciever is kinda keeping me with xm. 10 bucks a month is really nohing.

I'm looking for a small enough head control to fit in place of the ashtray/lighter so it can be hidden.[/quote]

The CRA-1667RF is the perfect addition to any factoty audio system. You can add an XM Tuner, CD Changer and even an Auxilliary audio source to any radio with an FM tuner. Need to play your MP3 collection? Simply add on a CHA-S634 6-Disc CD/MP3 Changer. Have a CVA-1005 or IVA-C800 and want to add XM Radio? Just Add the TUA-T020XM and the optional KCA-121B adaptor.

RE: Satelite radio?

Nice sales pitch! :D

I have the Delphi Skyfi in my explorer and it's great. In the future I'm going to run a Pioneer Premier 'P940MP and use their XM tuner. I'd love, though, to get both Sirius and XM in my truck so I can do an honest first-hand comparison of each. Sirius is supposed to drop out less because their satellite is at a higher elevation so the signal gets blocked by houses and tree foliage less than XM, even though XM boasts of a stronger signal output. There's also a question of where Sirius will be finacially in the not-too-distant future. XM got a giant head start and is hundreds of thousands of subscriptions ahead of Sirius. Sirius has a tempting one-time lifetime subscription of $400 to those who can afford so big a gamble on a company whose future is unclear. But you're right; Sirius does have a better looking channel lineup (to my diverse tastes) an it's hard to beat having all of their music 100% commercial-free. Since all you frequenters are often computer addicts (trying not to use the four-letter "N" word...) XM also has the PCR. $69.95 gets you a small XM tuner to attach to your PC, an antenna, and all necessary wiring to listen to XM radio thru your PC, browsing all the stations you want simultaneously. You can even create a list of favorite artists and songs, and it will alert you when one is playing on a diffreent channel. One last comment: XM also offers a family plan... $10 a month for your primary tuner, then you can add more onto your account for $7 a month extra instead od the $10.

RE: Satelite radio?

I'll tell 'ya what I think.
I was one of the very very early, primative Cable TV subscribers. Most folks had never heard of it - while I had it ! It was $11.00 a month, and absolutely NO commercials.....A big selling point back then with them.

Today, my monthly bill is $89.00 with tons of commercials, even INFOmercials!

Learning from past experiences, I'll be damned if I will ever begin paying for RADIO! That's like paying to breath! Sirus XM, whatever is not getting 1 cent of mine. I've got in the house an 8-track - a cassette player/maker - a CD player & burner - 5 TVs (2 with cable) a stereo turntable and a cassette in every car, and a CD in the Jeep & a CD changer in the Lincoln. Enough, then we got cell phones that play radio and take pictures >>> HELP !!!

RE: Satelite radio?

You will like the satalittle radio becuase you like hip hp and rap so much. I have a hard time finding good rock stations to listen to on sirius.

RE: Satelite radio?

My brother has them both, XM in his truck and Sirius in his boat. After three 4-5 hour trips in his truck listening to XM on our way to our favorite fishing spots and spending 8-10 hours on the lake with Sirius each trip, I can decisively say that I prefer XM.

They are both great and you don't have to listen to those BS stations they have out in the middle of nowhere. The XM reception did cut out every now and then, but I wouldn't worry about it if you're not climbing mountains. The technology will get better, I'm sure of that.

Also worth noting is that they both make for a great game of "name that tune" since you can view artist and title. The Comedy stations will keep you laughing on those long trips.

RE: Satelite radio?

Kale: How did the 2 services compare to each other in your opinion? Audio quality? channel/stream selection? playlist depth? variety? DJ's? Et Cetera???

By the way, I DO climb mountains in my truck as part of my daily driving.

RE: Satelite radio?

I would say Satellite radio reception (not quality) is similar to AM. Go under a bridge and it cuts out. Drive through some deep tree cover and it cuts out. The antennae needs to be in direct line with the satellite. I believe that's true with both XM and SIRIUS. Since SIRIUS was on the boat, and we were usually in a pretty open area being on a lake, reception never cut out.

As far as quality, I'm not qualified to say because the system is his truck is bone stock and the one on his boat is only a modest system. I wouldn't think sound quality would be that big of a difference between the two.

Why would I choose XM? The main reason is because the old school hip hop is better. I also think the Jazz is better and I like their "decades" programming, esp. the 70's station. The reggae was better on XM too, but neither have a real good reggae station that I like enough to pay for satellite radio.

You mentioned playlist depth - I'd say that XM has better programming in that regard, but that might be because I've heard more SIRIUS than XM. We heard repeats on every station that we listened to for any amount of time.

RE: Satelite radio?

screw satelite. get an mp3 player and load up a cd with 2-300 songs and forget about reception and commercials and whatever other gripe people have with satelite. hit the shuffle button and its like youve got your own personal radio station playing only songs u like.

RE: Satelite radio?

the town car might already play mp3's. Some new cars come with that feature stock.

RE: Satelite radio?

No, it does not.
If you were to ask me what is the worst feature of the '03 Town Car, I would not have to think for more than 1 second. It's the stereo! :(
It's an Alpine. Now, the ascMcLarens came with an Alpine and I've never ceased being amazed what a powerful clear and flawless sound they have. One's in the 1986, so it's a 17 year old unit. You should hear it, words cannot do it justice. Now, fast forward 17 years to the 2003 Town Car Alpine. Weak is a good word to describe it. The volume control needs to be turned up to the middle posistion, rather than 1/3rd of the way up. At 1/2 way she still is weak sounding. The cassette & CD Changer are very good. She has a single slot CD player in the dash, AND a stacker in the trunk, but......Oh that radio :(
I still say the BEST factory stereos reside in Dodges & Chryslers ! Unparalled to any other. (Don't tell me about stereos in foreign cars as I have NO knowledge of them, as I don't sit in those cars...

Dodges & Chryslers are foreign cars :)

The JBL in the Mark VIII is not that bad for a factory stereo. We all know the Sony (foreign) CD chager stinks in it though.
