Screwed up my transmission pan

I changed my transmission fluid in my F150. It has the 4R70W transmission with the improved pan design. Anyway, I drilled a hole in the side and installed a drain plug. I installed it in a location where the inside nut interferes with the valve body!!! So, today, I ordered a new pan from my local Ford Dealer. It cost $24 and change and is supposed to be here tomorrow. I was tempted to order two, on more for the Mark. I guess I will wait until the fluid needs changing. Live and Learn!
By the way, it had that plastic plug in the pan that was used to plug the dipstick hole. I had forgotten about it until I did some searching and found the discussion on it.

RE: Screwed up my transmission pan

They offer BOTH deep sump pans, one with a drain plug installed, and one without($24.00). I think the pan with the plug is almost double the price.

That little "dip-stick plug" used to mean that the tranny was "virgin" but now-a-days, they use a machine to extract the fluid through the cooling lines, and never remove the pan(which sucks for the filter!!!). Dont panic if you have 75k miles on your car, and drop the pan and find that little plug. That doesnt mean it never got a fluid change, it just means that the pan has never been off.

When we used to perform "virgin" tranny services at our shop, we would provide that little "plug" to the customer, so they knew we removed the pan, and replaced the filter too.

RE: Screwed up my transmission pan

I asked the dealer parts guy about the pan with the drain plug and he said he couldn't get one. Maybe just ignorance on his part.

I bought my truck new and it has 80k on it. This was the first fluid change. I know I should have changed it sooner. On the plus side, the pan was clean and the fluid looked good. There wasn't much to clean off the magnet. Most of those miles were logged on the road cruising. Since 2000, I have worked in Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio. Some 3 or 4 day weekends when I couldn't get a good price on airline tickets, I would drive home to Wilmington NC from those locations. The 4 wheel drive is a invaluable plus driving in the snow, when you have to get somewhere regardless of the weather. I also get paid by the hour and if I don't show up for work because of the snow, I don't get paid.

Another thing, I installed one of these drain plugs in the Mark pan and it leaked. The plug was bought from Autozone in the help section. It came with a nylon washer. I took it off again and installed two washers with a rubber inner ring that is intended for an oil pan drain plug. These washers fixed the leak. The washers are available at Advance Auto Parts but they are kept behind the counter. You have to ask for them.

RE: Screwed up my transmission pan

I think Max at 5star said the pan with the factory drain plug was from a van and also if I remember correctly it was about $85
