what the....

yea, so i was driving....maybe pushing it a little...and all the sudden....pop pop pop pop...but much faster than your reading. Like popopopopopopopopopopop...even faster tho..so i pull over, pop the hood, and there the spark plug still attached to the boot arcing against fender well.

So i drive over ot buddies house, and cant get the spark plug back in yet.... any suggestions... Im using extension. plug fits in socket...??

noone better mention helicoil. dammit.

RE: spark plug popped out

When I asked you about the threads, I meant the ones in the head, not on the spark plug. Take a look inside with a flashlight and see if you can see threads in the head.

RE: spark plug popped out

This is not unheard of. A good friend (Goalie) who had a 97 Base Mark 8 had this happen to him. I believe he was able to repair without Re/Re the head. Helicoil I believe. I did a quick search and this came up.

Definitely not an endorsement, just an example...

Good luck and don't sweat it. It'll work out ok..

RE: spark plug popped out

Less painting and more attention to your car!!! :D

I hope everything works out, that happened to a friend of mine with a Toyota truck, the plug popped out with enough force to put a good size dent in the underside of the hood... pretty noticeable from the top too... ::nono::

I’m pretty sure he was able to just screw it back in though…

RE: spark plug popped out

Grifter had a problem with his car a few months ago....lost a spark plug as well. This was on a '97 though. Lets just say the results weren't pretty....he wound up with a broken piston.

RE: spark plug popped out

Any update?

The reason I ask is because I had the same thing happen to me when I put a set of TR-6 plugs in my car.

3rd hole from the front of the engine on the drivers side.
The plug blew out with such force it shattered the bolt-on plug cover.

I recovered from it without a broken piston or needing to remove the cylinder head.

Helicoil makes a SPECIFIC kit for spark plug repair.

It's not the same kit used in other repairs that have the cheesy little "coil spring" type things.

This kit is an ACTUAL STEEL Cylinder with threads on the inside AND the outside.
The kit comes with the proper tap required to repair your head.

After you run the tap down the hole, you then thread in this hardened steel insert.

IMHO the repaired hole is in better shape the all the other 7 original holes.

The inserts have "more" threads, and the same problem wont occur again in the future, atleast.. NOT ON THAT HOLE.

I'm almost inclined to perform the repair on the other 7 holes for a bit of "peice of mind".

It's been roughly 100,000 HARD miles since the repair and I've had no problems with it... at this point, I feel I can TRUST that repair.

Granted.. for awhile, and many miles I was quite nervous.

NOW, I would suggest this to "family and friends".

RE: spark plug popped out

I got mine at O'reilly Auto Parts, they had it in Stock.
I'll see if I can dig up some online reference to it.

RE: spark plug popped out

Head must have been cross threaded to start with.. or the plug wasn't screwed in all the way. No way could the plug just come out unless the threads where messed up.

Well in my case that IS and isn't true.

I've always been very careful with the aluminum heads and their threads.

I've also been very careful to get the plugs fully tight and careful not to overtighten them.

Not too long AFTER my spark plug blew out was I informed that..
"your not supposed to pull the spark plugs out of a hot motor".

When you do, the threads can distort and do funky stuff as they cool down un-evenly and un-uniformly.

Coupled with the little known fact that ford put VERY FEW actual threads in the hole compounds the above problem.

I think there are 4-5 actual threads in these heads where previous older heads had many more 6-8,10 threads.

Imagin how fragile 4-5 threads can be if you can visualize that.

The actual area involved is between a 1/4 and a 1/2 inch. that's NOT alot of "material".

The thread repair kit I used came with three different sized "INSERTS".

1 had the "stock amount" of threads
1 had twice as many thread
1 had three times as many threads

I used the one that had twice as many threads as the original hole.

I'm still considering going around and putting the inserts in the remaining 7 holes, that's how satisfied I am with the kit..

IMHO the repaired hole is better than the stock holes.

I've kinda refrained from "endorsing" this fully until I put some miles on the car..
So far.. roughly 100,000 miles.. NO PROBLEM SO FAR

"your mileage may vary, not valid with other offers"

..hope this helps

RE: spark plug popped out

FWIW,
I used to take a fresh set of plugs to the track and change them after I got to the track..on a very hot engine.

I forgot to mention that in my NOVEL above

RE: spark plug popped out

update:
yea, plug popped out, it was helicoiled. I guess helicoil either broke or unscrewed? ...but either way, it still came out and when i tried to get plug back in it was to big to catch the threads. I took it to dealership and they did it for 250$. not bad i guess, had to do some name dropping.(Pa hires people for harley and has hired a couple of mechanics in past from same dealership).

engine came back with a lite miss. Spark plug boot(nology) cracked and spark was just hitting inside of plug well.

trying to get a replacment wire from nology. this is little twisted: i have to send them the wire that broke for them to send me back one. i guess im just gonna wait a week til im going back to school to send it.
