Sudden missing at all speeds, no CE light.....

'95 base, all stock, 95,000 miles. I was crusing at 55-60mph, running perfect, then I felt a noticable misfire. Continued to misfire all the way home, even while idling into the garage. Never threw the CE light, all fluids normal, everything else seems fine.

Ran the self test with a Sunpro CP9015 yesterday, here's what I got:
Key On, Engine Off
111
214

Key On, Engine Running
536
538
632

After running the tests once, I disconnected the battery, reconnected it, drove the car a couple miles, and ran the tests again. This time I got:
KOEO
111

KOER
536
538
632

Notice the 214 didn't show up on the second test. My book shows the following:
214 is Cylinder Identification (CID) Sensor - Circuit failure.
536 is Brake On-Off (BOO) Switch - Circuit Failure or not activated during Engine Run Self Test.
538 is Insufficient RPM change during Dynamic Response Test (Engine Run Self Test), or,
Invalid cylinder balance test - throttle position movement, or,
Invalid cylinder balance test - Cylinder identification problems.
632 is Overdrive Cancel Switch (OCS) - no switch action detected during Engine Run Self Test

What does that stuff mean? Can bad wires/plugs trigger these codes? I hate to say it, but I might end up at the dealership with it.

RE: Sudden missing at all speeds, no CE light.....

replace your plugs and wires.

also, have you had an occasional stalling problem when you tip into the throttle? That CID circuit failure is most likely the wiring pigtail to the cam position sensor located behind the power steering reservoir. I had the same code on my '94 and i cut off the pigtail and attached the wires to the sensor and it fixed it.

RE: Sudden missing at all speeds, no CE light.....

I've not had the stalling issue you describe, but I will check that connector. Plugs and wires, along with a fuel filter are going to be the first things I do, but can the plugs and wires trigger the codes that came up?

RE: Sudden missing at all speeds, no CE light.....

the 536 is because you didn't hit the brake when it wanted you to, the 632 is because you didn't hit the od off button when it wanted you to. don't know about 538, but it may be related to 214. I'd change the plugs and wires, clear the codes and see if any of them come back. On my '94 i didn't get any codes when it started missing (bad wires), but on my '97 (with COP ignition) i did get a code when the plugs were bad.

RE: Sudden missing at all speeds, no CE light.....

When you do the KOER test, aside from tapping the brake, and the OD switch cycle, you are also supposed to do a brief WOT which is where the 538 code comes from.

RE: Sudden missing at all speeds, no CE light.....

I'd say it could be the wires. Also, since you haven't gotten a light, those codes that you got could have been saved.

I know it sounds stupid, but have you checked the connections around your air filter? I have a mass air kit, and once, when I had it worked on at some bad, bad place, which I no longer give my business to, they left the hose hanging completely wrong, and I didn't get any codes, but was misfiring badly.
