Temp gauge is posessed

Ok. Changed the thermostat. I had to do the gasket 4 times before I got it in there right and went through 2 of them before I managed to not pinch or split it. I still have no idea why Lincoln wanted to charge me $370 to do it for me.

Anyway.. before I did the thermostat and continuing now is the problem that my temp gauge it moving around erratically. It goes from dead cold to somewhere near the bottom letter on the gauge to cold again and anywhere in between. It never seems to get to a "normal" range and it usually just goes back down to the bottom.

Ideas what might cause that? -- Again, it was doing this before I changed the thermostat and is still doing it afterwards.

Since you emptied and refilled the fluid, I'm assuming there are no air bubbles in your system.

My next guess would be an intermittant electrical contact to the coolant sensor. You can remove the connector and put it back on to see if that does the trick. The connector is a round fitting over the sensor itself, no harness to deal with. It's on top, near the crossover tube.

I agree to check the coolant sensor connection, but I would still recheck for air in the system following the proper procedures.

thanks guys. I did fill correctly (though I've overfilled it on purpose to ensure that there was no air). If I loosen the fill nut nothing comes out but liquid so I'm fairly certain I got all the air out. Since the car doesn't overheat and the heater blows warm I'm going to check the sensor next like you guys suggest.
