Transmission Questions

RE: Transmission Questions

I put the pan with drain plug from Dennis on my '98 Mark a couple of weeks ago. I've changed the filter twice now at 47000 miles and now I figure on draining the pan about every 5000 miles or so. I'm using Castrol Mercon V in it and I hope for long transmission life.

RE: Transmission Questions

just completed my pan put 12 qts. started car looked under to check big puddle if fluid big, when I was putting fluid after 8 qts it behaved as if it was full, but I continued to fill to 12 any ideas its dark now cant check to see where it came from

RE: Transmission Questions

How much did you drain?! You may have only drained 8 quarts and put in 12! Did you drain the TC?

Check the level on the dipstick!

RE: Transmission Questions

When filling a trans you need to watch how much you put in. Fill it until the stick says full, then run the car, and top it off as it goes down.

If you haven't run the car yet, do it now. You have to start it for fluid to be pumped through the converter and tranny cooler. Once those parts are full the fluid level will go down. If you've already run it and warmed it up, and it's still overfilled, then you need to drain a little off.

RE: Transmission Questions

The stock capacity of the 4R70Wis 12 quarts. A common mistake is to drain the fluid, refill with 12 quarts assuming 12 quarts drained out.

The pan should be pulled and the TC drained at the same time. Re-install the plug in the TC and reinstall the pan, torquing the bolts.

From the FAQ:

17. Open the hood and remove the transmission dipstick. You will find it against the starboard firewall, slightly lower than the air conditioner hoses. Install the fill funnel tube into the top of the transmission fill tube. Did you check the funnel's insides for dirt, dust and grime? If it ain't finger-licking clean, all that crap is going into your transmission along with that expensive Mercon V. Once you have a clean fill tube, start pouring in the Mercon V.

a. We suggest that you pour in half of what was pulled out with the motor off. Then jack up the rear wheels, install jack stands and start the motor. Run through all the positions on the shift lever, taking the time to allow the fluid to activate the position selected. One or both rear wheels may spin.

b. Stop the motor and pour the remaining fluid into the transmission while it is sitting there. Put in as much as you took out.

c. Start the motor again and run through the gears again. Allow to idle for a few minutes and then check for leaks. Shut it down.

18. Drop the car back on the ground. Clean up, get in and cycle the shift lever through all the gears. Take the car for a test drive. Drive it for about 20 miles, or enough to warm up the fluid. It should be smooth as glass and no there should be no shutter.

19. Back home, on a level surface, Keep the motor running and check the fluid level. It should show HOT FULL. If not add fluid in ½ pint increments until it does show the proper level.
