Valve Cover gasket replace DIY or dealership

I changed plugs in my 97 today and had a little bit of oil on the plug boots on the drivers side. How hard are these to replace? I am not afraid to do it myself, but what is the easist way to do it? Anyone whos done it have any tips? This isn't my daily driver, so getting it done fast is not important. Also anyone have an extra set of gen II valve covers for a reasonable price? I would love to have some powder coated before I change them out.

I always find a little bit of oil on the front one on the driver side plug boot. It is typical to find some oil on them. I believe it is the head gasket and not the valve cover gasket that leaks. So the head has to come off, and on a 4 cam engine it is not a simple task. The driver side is harder then the passenger side as well.

I've done the passenger side. Some good RTV sealant and a good non-hardening gasket cement to hold the gasket in place during the blind faith installation is a must.

I've heard the drivers side is a PITA. Jacking up the drivers side of the engine helps as well as loosening but not removing the brake booster.

If it's only a slight amount and not hurting performance, unless you're as anal as I am, I wouldn't worry about it.

Well, it was only a little bit last year, but its quite a bit now. Also it is hurting the performance, it runs like crap, so new gaskets are in order. :(

I used PERMATEX® HYLOMAR®* HPF Gasket Dressing and Flange Sealant to tack glue the gasket to the cover and the donuts to the spark plug well bosses on the head. Then I used a thin coating of RTV silicone to the surfaces of the gaskets. When positioning the cam cover back in place, it is a blind operation as you cannot possibly verify proper gasket placement when you get the cover in place. Thus the need to hold the gaskets in place during the operation. The gaskets are reuseable if not visibly damaged.

I've done the drivers side twice now, huge PITA trying to get those dang donuts to stay in place, even with the sealant stuff. 2nd time seems to be the charm as I haven't found anymore oil, although I still have the shudder, but I beleive I may have found the culprit for that...

Well the bolt that connects the intake tube to the throttle body broke so i haven't been able to confirm it yet, but when i took the tube off i noticed the gasket was all mangled which may have caused an air leak straight into the TB. I may have just found someone wit the bolt, so hopefully i can test the theory soon.
