What's it made out of?

As I peruse the 4.6 parts sites, I was wondering what I should keep and what I should upgrade. To that end, what is forged and what is cast in the bone-stock Mark VIII engine? Specifically the crank, rods, and pistons.

Also, how much difference (from an intake installing standpoint) are the factory DOHC heads than the '99 and up tumble port heads?

Thank'n you.........

There is nothing forged in the engine but that doesn't mean it can't handle a decent amount of power. You can't install 99+ heads without a 99+ intake manifold.

.....and I'm assuming the converse is true: you can't install the newer intake on the older heads. Does the difference lie in port matching, bolt pattern, ??? What I'm asking is, what makes a '99+ head different?

RE: What's it made out of?

Port design actually. The 99+ are a "tumble port" design. The intakes won't actually bolt up because the runners are raised for a straighter shot. If you haven't already, might I sugest picking up Sean Hyland's book on the 4.6L and 5.4L modular motors? I have found a lot of info in there to be very useful, and it also helped clear up many questions I have had about what parts are in which motors.

RE: What's it made out of?

the pre 99's have a dual port configuration on the intqake side, while the newer C heads have the single large port for both valves, aka tumble port. heads and intakes do not interchange at all.

Wonderful. As usual, you guys have earned your pay. And I'll check out Sean Hyland's book on the 4.6L and 5.4L modular motors.

Thanks again.
