Where to get rear caliper tool?

RE: Where to get rear caliper tool?

Thanks for the link, Ray. I may order one, since my T-Bird brakes are also almost due. Since we've got over 13 S.F. Bay area members, maybe I can rent it out... ::roll::

You can get the $10 tool at your local Schucks/AutoZone to work, but you may have to grind down a couple of "nubs". Here's a pic of what I used:http://www.mark8.org/lod/braketool.jpgI bought the tool above at NAPA.Kale

Ditto on the grinding but it works with a little force x( .

RE: Where to get rear caliper tool?

How could you break the tips that you ground down??? LOL! I'm assuming that is a typo since you wouldn't be using the tips that were altered, and even if they did break off it wouldn't matter. The tool worked great for me. If you really get in a bind, it wouldn't be too hard to fab something like this up...

RE: Where to get rear caliper tool?

NAPA has a tool that I use. The cube sucks as it is just a little too small after grinding off the two extra ears.

Search for NAPA in this area and the part number can be found.

NAPA part number 3355 (it was bugging me.)

This caliper tool came today and looks very well built! It also looks like it will make changing the rear pads very easy! I'll let you know how it goes...John[link:mark8.org/lodnca|NorCal Chapter Website]http://mark8.org/users/johnaec/Mark_VIII_s.jpg'97 Mark VIII LSC'96 T-Bird 4.6L

Please do let us know!

One thing I noticed (when doing the rear brakes on my wife's Jetta) was that the "plate" part of the tool is fairly thick. Her rear pads were down to the metal, so the piston was 'out' pretty far. As a result, I couldn't get the tool in between the piston and the caliper bracket until I was able to manually retract the piston a little bit. That was frustrating.

It works great!

It works great!

I got that caliper tool from Tool Paradise and did the driver side rear last night. ('Ran out of time - 'doing the passenger side tonite.)

This tool is awesome!! The #7 plate fit the Mark VIII perfectly, and I didn't have the plate thickness problem mentioned even though my pads were grinding metal! And having a threaded slack adjuster to keep it snug against the piston made turning the piston in the easiest part of the whole job.

BTW - when you get the piston in, be sure to leave it with the adjusting slots pointing straight in and out so the pin on the brake pad will slide in.

Here's where I got the tool:
