X-pipe or H-pipe?

 I listened to some clips of exhausts on YouTube.com. The best one I heard was of a Mercury Marauder with an H-pipe. He had a clip of the same car with an X-pipe, but the H-pipe sounded better, outside the car anyway. What would the difference be inside the car in regards to drone. I hear the X-pipe is good for the drone inside. Does an H-pipe do the same? Also, does the placement of the H or X-pipe make a difference?

They both accomplish the same thing however the H pipe disrupts the smooth flow more. My muffler guy wont use an H, and he makes his own X pipes.

So disrupting the flow gives it a throatier, choppier sound? If I'm not racing the car than the H-pipe woulld be OK? To reduce drone the pipe(H or X) should be towards the front of the vehicle I'm guessing?

There are many old threads about X and H pipes here. For performance(not sound), the shorter wheel based Mustangs prefer the H pipes. For the longer wheel based cars, like the Mark, they prefer the X pipe. If your only concern is the sound of the exhaust, then that long wheel based Marauder, with essentially the same engine and length of exhaust, should be a very good indicator of how the Mark might sound with the same setup.

Cool! That Marauder sounded awsome with the H-pipe. I'm not planning on making it a race car although it could use some more pep. I can't remove the third cat for legal reasons but they do make dual in/dual out cats right? I didn't see one on either the Magnaflow or Flowmaster web sites. Also, does the distance from the muffler to the exit of the tailpipe make a big difference in tone?

Magna Flow offers a dual in dual out in several sizes (I'm using 3" in and out), and internally it does the "X"ing. This fits in between the tranny and the diff on centerline as a 3rd cat would. (Magnaflow#12469)

So cut out the factory third cat and run duals back and put the Magnaflow after the tranny? Will it fit where the original was?

I've had both types at one time or the other. I ran both the X before, and the H pipe that is installed on the car now. The H is better for high end flow i've noticed on highway WOT, identical tune only changing the exhaust. You loose some of the crispiness of the start off low end throttle with the H and the X is better low end crispy throttle response, but didnt seem to flow as good at the top end. Both have drone as was in my case with true duals.
I too wanted the gurgle GT sound but its not going to happen on our Marks with the two mufflers mounted in the rear of the pipe ive found.

To get the GT sound you have to relocate the two muffs up into the middle of the car closer to the engine or headers and retain the tailpipes to the rear. Resonators at tips are optional. Mandrel bends rule. My next setup will be a Magnaflow two in two out with X in middle like Roadboss car. Then just have some stock Mark VIII tips for the rear. Our exhausts are to long to get that snappy raspy tone the Stangs have. Flowmasters are too loud in my book and i have run the Magnaflows becuase they are quieter and have a deeper rumble when idleing. Hope this helps, ive spent too much money on exhausts. haha And i here, I want to change it again.

You could always opt for the double-Y, single-X setup...

about how much would a system like that go for the double y single x setup w. Elect cutouts? (I've been looking into diff systems not changing until spring tho)

haha I remember those...

Nice JP, your Mark did sound bad to the bone at SSHS launching. Were you running it open for the track? I got you in a couple of vids. And Mike too, along with Reinhart's beast. Very nice rides. Also Goldberg's T-bird and that evil White Impalla with the rollcage in it. Ive got them all on CD now to transfer over to the big computer, but it took 2 CDs to do it. Photobucket only lets you put up 100meg per thing so that's not gonna happen. I already tired it. Wouldnt take.
Email me to personal email and ill send it through yahoo IM. Works like a charm. OR G-mail has no restrictions.

Got it, im trying both links now.
