So when was that taken Jesse? Getting any more done on her? Mine is on hold until at least January.
Just the other day. Its in my friends garage. In that pic, the k member is out, the oil pan is off, the motor mounts are off, a bolt is broke off in the block, the oil filter adapter is one hose clamp from coming off, and the exhaust manifolds are a few bolts/nuts away from coming off. Expecting to get the broke bolt out, and the manifolds off by Sunday. Hoping to actually start putting parts back on it!

The lower license plate looks like it has the letters "MAR" on the top.... Maryland perhaps? but did they ever have a cable car?

Maryland makes sense. I found a few plates on google with the same format, and "Maryland" printed across the top. That, with the addition of what is obviously the District of Columbia plate above it, puts this in that area.

Of course most everyone had streetcars back then, so they aren't as good of an indicator as one might think. According to Wikipedia, DC had streetcars from 1862-1962. Baltimore had them too, although beginning the 1890's

Too bad there aren't any buildings visible. that'd make the location a bit easier to track down.

Tonight's project: A "vintage" Technics SA-913. I rescued this little receiver from the "scrap" bin at work. I bet my co-worker that it was in there for no other reason than being "old."

Turns out I was (mostly) right. The backlight was out, but all the inputs, sliders, and switches work perfectly. The unit itself isn't really "audiophile" grade, and it doesn't output huge power, but It is a good, clean example of mid-80's Japanese design. It does seem to have a better tuner than I expected. Even in my basement, it is pulling in all of the major stations in the area.

For the backlight, I soldered in an bayonet-base automotive LED bulb I had on-hand. Not necessarily ideal, as I didn't bother rectifying the AC, so there is a perceptible flicker. The fact that it is routed through a light-guide seems to help somewhat. Brightness is good with the load-resistor I ran in series with the bulb. We'll see what the lifespan is like. I have more of these, but I left everything in place to go back to incandescent if the future demands it.

Now I just have to figure out what to do with it. :D I already have a system in the garage, and another downstairs for the "home theater," While my Bang & Olufsen serves the rest of the house.

I'm considering putting together a workshop for my bicycles in the main room downstairs, so maybe there. Or a friend suggested speakers for the back yard. Not a bad idea at all.

Unless one of you is in the market for something like this, anyway..

Way cool, Mike! Better than scrapping it! Hook up some Bose 101 Music Monitors to it for the backyard, you can most likely connect a CD player or an iPod/MP3 player to it. Lots of things you can do with that!

I should have talked more about the inputs/outputs! It has speakers (A and B, individually switchable,) a tape loop, AUX, and Phono input. I'll admit I haven't tested the phono input, or the tape output, but the AUX and tape in (play) both work well. I have it hooked up to the computer that delivers audio to the rest of the house via the AUX input, and connected to a set of spare Sansui speakers. (again, nothing special) for testing. Power is certainly adequate for regular listening. Right now I have it kind of at the threshold of "can probably hear it outside" and I'm maybe at 1/3rd volume.

I'll have to try to track down some outdoor speakers like the Bose 101s you mention. I'm liking that idea more and more, even if my neighbors may not.. :D

With "LOD" Since 1997
i had an old school component system like that, of course the tuner was just one part, and with big speakers, the bigger the better.

Definitely! Here are the Bose 101s, you can find them easily on the 'Bay. Average price there is about $60 for a pair, and they come in black or white. I have 3 pairs of these and they sound GREAT!! Neighbors? Invite them over!!!

I have the Bose 101's attached to the deck side of my house. I have them connected to a 3 zone Denon AVR2808CI, and they work great when entertaining!
