You are not far from the Vette Drs in Amityville, that is a hike.

The office town web site sucks, i found this info so far:

Mike, do they have you working lots of hours?
Sorry mike, missed that question. We are on 12 hour shifts. All federal money. Luckily they just cancelled the marathon because they had guys going in on their day off to cover this crap. They don't care about us at all.

I'm not sure that I understand why people weren't better prepared. We were told for several days that this was going to happen.

I filled both trucks and my generator with gas, as well as two 5 gallon cans. That gave me a total of ~50 gallons available.
Tucked the cars safely away and every loose item outside my house was moved indoors.
My wife filled every container that she had with water and then filled every available space in both refrigerators with those containers.
We bought a week's worth of canned/non-perishable goods.
I tested my generator and my makeshift wiring to ensure that I could provide my family (wife, daughter, grandson) with fresh food and heat.
Our stove is gas, so the burners can be lit with a match.
We got cash out.

And I loaded the arsenal, just in case.

The only thing that I wasn't able to get done, that I wish that I had, was to cover the large picture window in the second story of my foyer. Trust me, I'll be ready for that in the future, if it becomes necessary.

When we lost power Monday @ 3:15 pm, before Sandy had even landed, we were ready.

I did the same thing, filled up all cars with gas, loaded up on milk for the baby. Changed the oil in the generator, took stuff inside that would blow away, etc.. .

Will be better prepared for the next outage, the electrician finished my standby generator install today:

I'll admit I'm not as prepared as I should be at times. There was a time you could pull the plug and I could batten down the hatches and be fine for a week or more.

I'd be feeling pain after 2-3 days as it is now.

But, I do not live in a metro area where competition for survival in an aftermath could be fierce.

I'm on the gas line and it's already a few hundred cars long.

I guess I just didn't believe the hype, I've lived here my whole life and even through hurricane Gloria in the 80's and never thought it could be like this. I'm still stunned, everyday I wake up wishing I didn't cause its the same misery and spend days not working with scavenging for gas. It's pitiful actually. Who'd a thunk it. Obviously I've learned my lesson.

the news looks grim right now for this area. :( i think things will get a bit worse before they get better with the gas situation. i hope that nor-easter don't hit us mid week

i wish people would just help each other instead of competing and thinking this is Armageddon and it is everyone for themselves. I am happy I live in a nice neighborhood were people look out for each other, It this situation it has to take place at the local level for people. People should car pool etc. And let the state and feds get the infrastructure going again. The people who came here and fought and founded this country did so with no electricity and gas.

I'm wishing all you guys up north the best. I know you're not used to hurricanes and it's effected y'all more than it normally does us.

Good luck Mike. That'd be us... I like to be over-prepared while Hubby likes to wing it. Any way you can get a full gas can from work so you can continue to show up? I hope you're gonna at least get some OT out of this. Take care and know we are all thinking about you.

I just saw where the army is bringing in tanker trunks of gas to LI and the other NYC counties. They will be giving away 10 gallons. The coast guard just opened up the ports so they are working on the Linden, NJ filling depot now as well to get the tanker trucks filled.

Also they said 70% of the gas stations out on LI have gas but no power so the Army is bringing in generators for those stations.

Hang on a bit more, hopefully by Monday thinks will start to move back to some sort of normal.

Well I have enough gas to get to work now, I work on Sunday so waiting til Monday does me no good. But I am learning to cope and think I'll make due after the zombie apocalypse. After waiting 2 1/2 hours to get gas, which they limit you to $40 (didn't know this til I got to the pump) I went home and took to making breakfast, apparently Meredith can sleep through all if this ( still asleep right now ) pfft!

I got hot coffee from 7-11 but they had no French vanilla creamer, luckily I have a bottle at home going to waste in my make-shift refrigerator

Then I wanted eggs so I thought, how can I fry eggs without power to my electric stove?

BBQ!

Came out pretty good actually and toast too, light but it had the effect.

Now I'm going to go for a walk as I'm afraid to run and get sweaty, as I have nowhere to shower. I have never gone so long without a shower.

See if you can get baby wipes and waterless no rinse shampoo, we used that for my grandfather when he was bedridden to bath him.
