Coolant suggestions

I've been getting the 'Low Coolant' message on the display. I haven't checked for leaks yets, and I haven't seen any puddles or smelled coolant in the car, so I'm hoping it just needs some coolant.

I searched but came up with too many false positives to be useful. But I did see that I should put coolant mix in the tube that runs by the alternator, instead of the coolant overflow tank. Or atleast that's what I think I saw...

Anyway, any suggestions for some coolant to get, or to avoid would be great!

Thanks!

When the system has been worked on it needs to go in the cross-over to make sure all the air it out. Its the highest point.

However, the error is a result of low coolant in the expansion tank. Whats the level in the tank? If its at proper level the sensor is bad, thats all. If you have not worked on the system and the tank is low you can fill it. However being a closed system low coolant would mean a leak.

I would burp the system.....when cool...open the crossover tube and start engine....do you see the coolent in there? where is it in the overflow bottle? If low, add coolent in the crossover until it starts to rise in the overflow bottle. STOP! Replace covers, take car for a run so that it gets up to normal operating temp.... Do you still get a "Low Coolent" message? If so, repeat until no more message. That's what worked on mine....

It's very inconsistent. Sometimes it goes off, and goes off, and goes off. And then today was the hottest day of the year(until tomorrow), and I was really enjoying the throttle going up hills, and it didn't go off once.

So, any recomendations for brand/type of coolant?

Thanks again!

Just the standard green, 50% w/ water. I'd still burp it like I said....Then you are sure. You MAY have run the bubbles out of it!

I personally have switched to the "Pet Safe" stuff.

You never know when some will leak or burp out and I don't want anything to happen to my "Jack"

"pet-safe" antifreeze (propylene glycol) versus the more commonly used, more deadly, ethylene glycol.

I didn't even know that they still made the ethylene based coolant anymore...

Thanks everyone. I'll check out this stuff on Sunday, and see what's up.

A few years ago, like 3-4 years ago, I got the low coolant message. Never found any leaks, filled it up at the cross over tube, and its been fine ever since.

Just get a small socket 1/4 I think and open the top and start pouring . I just got a all aluminum radiator because my old plastic jug broke on me.

I was rechecking this today when I was looking for other trans issues items, and the overflow tank is only an inch or two below the fill level mark, and it never runs hotter than the R in NORMAL. I also noticed that it only seems to go off when I'm going up hill. So, I'm hoping/guessing it's the sensor.

Do the burp thing.

Do the burp thing.

On the upper crossover tube. And then top off the resivoir tank if it needs more later. If you do the tube and let it spill over a little while the bubbles rush out when the thermo opens, youll know for sure you have all air out.

P.S. I love that drive way...You got your own little turn around and plenty of parking for parties. Coool.

Look at Evans Coolant.

I've ran it in everything from motorcycles to 900Ft Lb Diesel powered pick-up trucks with great success.

Coolant boils at 375F, and it won't pressure up to more than 7PSI. You'll have to worry about your engine oil temps (motor oil starts breaking down at around 240F) before you have to worry about overheating. It's a little pricier than your usual water based coolant though. However, you're looking at 500K mile service intervals.

Welcome! :)

The Evans NPG+ coolant has been on my 'to do' list a long, long time! When I get around to putting in the new Cobra radiator, I think I will change over then. :)

my guage never leaves the L? 160 T stat... water works for me! - water boils at 212? i dont think my temps are getting that hot if its not moving pass the L, I'm not sure of what degree temp that's indicative of, would be nice to know instead of NORMAL, why not degrees guh.
