Gushing out gas!

Put fresh gas in the tank yesterday. Drove a friend around town and used about 30 miles worth of gas. Parked the car in the driveway. Came back outside a few minutes later to get the mail and could smell gas. The closer I got to the car I could hear this gurgling sound. Went over to the passenger side of the car and saw gas pouring out around the door. I opened the gas door and popped the gas cap off at which time fuel just came blowing out the nozzle! I really had no idea what to do. I let it do that for about 30 seconds before I realized it wasn't stopping and I sure as hell didn't want to lose all that gas so I put the gas cap back on which seem to slow it back down enough that it stopped altogether. So my question is this. What the hell could cause this? I know that this is a return style fuel system. I know that the fuel pump should shut off when the car is shut off. I'm not sure if this car has a vent solenoid or pressure solenoid in the EVAP system if there even is one. To my knowledge this has never happened before. I've never hung around my car after getting out of it to see if it does this.
