Turboing your Mark

I've heard of these simply as "rear-mounted turbos". They are a great idea, pros are saving room under hood, not needing new intake and headers, not really needing an inter-cooler cuz by the time the air gets all the way back up there it is pretty much as cool as it gets, and weight distribution, and easier installation/less fabrication which means much cheaper to do. The only con I know of is trying to get the oil back there.

They put a twin turbo set up like this on a Vette on Horsepower TV once. They said is was fairly easy. A lot of people will say that these create a lot of turbo-lag because of the distance between the turbo and intake but they said there was surprisingly little.

Always wanted to do one. There is even a kid around here who put one on his '94 Chevy Corsica at home.

With all of the advanced valving and variable computer controlled wastegates, turbo lag is a thing of the past.

I know STS Turbo's rear mounted system has zero lag...even according to the skeptics who have driven them.

I've heard only good things from the people who have them. The people bashing it mostly haven't seen or driven one in person. The only major issue I have heard of is issues with the rear mounted oil pumps.

I would still want to hear one first...

In all those vids, it seems like the car constantly sounds like a jet driving around...

I went for a ride in a Mustang with the STS system and it was very nice. I was suprised at how little lag there was and how nice the "hit" at full spool. I always thought about one for a Mark but figured running the charge pipe under the car would be problematic. There is just no room under there. :(

I spoke to a reputable local speed shop and they said 'no problem'.

I was going to do this until I lost my job last year.

Sure, but how many guys on here have a blower on a 12+ year old engine...dozens.

Util one blows up, I'd say go for it.

lol OOOOOK. Lots of Mark VIII engines "blow up" by 170-200k. I wouldn't do it unless i had a spare (engine) or if I could tear into the engine and strengthen it.

Btw, if a major, unaltered component of a car dies, you can file a comprehensive auto insurance claim.

When my engine goes boom, my insurance picks up the tab.

I would think that would only work for something along the lines of a hydro locked motor......

I asked them while I was inquiring about permanent major mods (like blowers, which are covered in the event of an accident)...they said all major failures due to wear, but not regular maintenance items. Could be a fine line there...do shock absorbers count?

Maybe it's just my insurance company, Kemper. I didn't ask, but I'm guessing that a blown engine due to adding a blower is not covered. In addition, if I were to make them replace an engine, my rates would go up, so it would come out of my pocket eventually...just not all at once.

Ahhh good ole Kemper. Back when I was in high school I was on my Dad's insurance (Kemper). I was driving my 72 Chevy truck and hit something on the freeway which punched a hole in my oil pan. I didn't notice anything until I heard the engine running funny via the exhaust. Pulled into a gas station and noticed a pen sized hole in the pan and lost about 2 quarts of oil. Called the insurance who said I had to pull it out and tear it apart before they would look at it. Paid someone to do that only to have Kemper decline the repair saying it was due to age. So...I was out an engine and the extra tear down money and had to rebuild another engine because it scored the block too much. (was already bored 30 over)

Don't rely too much on that policy Wayne. :D I like where you were going with it though....SRS would be easy to remove. :)

No, no...I would never try to decieve anyone. If a turbo blew my engine, I'm out of luck. It would just give me a good excuse to put a Cobra block in there.

And I've tangled with Kemper before...several times. They rarely side with the customer, but we've taken them to arbitration twice and won both times. The first time, someone hit my wife's parked H2 in a parking lot...while my wife was in it. They ruled against us, saying we were parked illegally. Arbitration reversed that decision. The second time, a car in front of me stopped at a GREEN light. Not expecting to stop, I clipped them in my Mark. They ran off (probably illegal immigrant). I told Kemper what happened, and they ruled against me. I took them to arbitration and it got reversed.

Short of a drunk running a red light and killing someone, Kemper will never rule in a customer's favor. It's a good thing arbitration is free. But that's just insurance 101...always rule against the customer.

Oh yeah...when I totalled my 93 Mark, which was totally my fault, Kemper reimbursed my performance tranny, sway bars, Nology wires, Eaton posi, and some other non-wear mods. All I had to do was show reciepts. So I guess the policy works sometimes...didn't need arbitration on this one.
