97LSC - work in progress

After sitting for a few months, Mike's car is next on the agenda.
We're trying to take care of typical mark viii issues so that Mike can hopefully enjoy it for a few years.

I pulled the trans and rear differential right before my vacation in December, and both were rebuild to new specs.

I had some time this afternoon to start putting things back together. Easy ... well not so much ;)

First, all 4 exhaust studs were rusted thin, and broke during exhaust removal.
I drilled the remnants out, and installed new coated OEM studs with flanges.

The trans has lost 2nd gear, and was very weak all around regardless of rather low mileage. It was brought up to spec by Rich at DetroitGearbox. The rear end was rebuild with brand new FRPP parts, including 4.10 gear set, and Trac-lok differential.

We also purchased a PI Stallion TC stalled to 3600RPM. While I am not a big fan of the high stalled cars, if you're not making early TQ, this is a great ticket to get going quick

Also pictured; mandatory trans line and cooler flush using a flushing kit - everytime the transmission fails, the cooling circuit needs to be cleaned out of possible debris.

That's it for now ;)

It is nice that people are keeping the Mark VIII on the road. It was about 20 years ago when I saw my first Mark VIII on the streets on NYC, it had Michigan plates and was a Manufactures car. My friends and I were like wow  I knew i wanted one and got one in 97. :)

I don't know what you mean by big plans, but this will be a totally new car when done. Proper tune should make this car a mid to high 13sec car, which is plenty for a daily driver ;)

The MMC Dynotech driveshaft is installed, so the car should be vibe free.

Of course, nothing comes without a fight. Since Mike had a pair of new rotors in the trunk, I decided to throw them on while the rear end is apart for the diff swap. One of the caliper pins was frozen solid. Kroil didn't help, but some heat did ;)

bit optimistic.
I am in a good mood today, so yeah ;)

I forgot Mike's a big fella too :D

Honestly I never had good luck with N/A setups. My old 95 mark viii with cobra intake, stock TC, 2.5 exhaust, and 4.10s wouldn't break 14.20s. So I added a vortech e-trim at 7psi, and it went 12.90s. Go figure.

With the stock intake and exhaust manifolds, that might be a bit optimistic.
LOL +2 Gen2 intakes are so full of fail it's sickening. If you wanna play the na game with a Gen2, ditch the stock intake and for sure open that exhaust up all the way to the exhaust ports. 14.1 was my best time in 2010 with stall, 4.10s, exhaust and STOCK intake. The Cobra intake on a Gen2 is worth a half second with good tuning believe it or not.

I don't do NA too well, plus this is not my car ;)

Half a sec from the cobra intake is not entirely accurate either. It only does work this way if all the other mods are in place, so in the end it makes every single mod work a lot better. You don't want some poor chap doing a swap on a stock mark, and expecting to gain that much. He won't.

How the hell does a caliper pin get that rusted!
The boot does have a tiny tear in it. It's probably due to the fact this car has sat a lot with its 63k miles.

You're right. I should have clarified. With full exhaust and headers though I bet it will be close to that though with a good tune and higher shift points. No reason a Gen2 shouldn't do mid 14s with intake, full exhaust with headers and tune. Some Gen1s have come close to that STOCK. But yeah you're right. Stock exhaust makes the Cobra intake pretty much a paperweight.

I've been so busy this week with work I haven't had time to get on to notice this thread. Looks good Jeremi, I forgot what the car was like, I am sending for it soon, can't wait. It will be the car I drive when I'm off and its nice out and I can afford the gas :D
