The Ivory KB car

Lost in Translation
J, being in the North kind-of limit what I can get. Moving back South here in a few weeks will alleviate much of that 'having to work on Northern cars' frustration I feel every time I slide under something here. One of the basketcases is coming back with me though, as good 4eye Mustang Coupes are getting HARD to find in good shape for a reasonable price.

I am about to kill a good Southern body though as I can't take it with me (it adds considerably to the moving cost). I will have to find another good donor when I get back to Florida. Sucks really, as I was hoping to fix two cars with this one.

I don't work on "northern" cars. It just doesn't make sense to spend any kind of money on something that has bad bones. I wish some people would understand that more .... :mad-tilt:
+1
It is a total pain.
Once you work on a rust free shell you won't go back.

Making some progress on the engine prep. The harnesses and all accessories have been removed.

Few broken exhaust studs. It doesn't look like there were any exhaust leaks though. The beauty of cast iron manifolds I guess ;) Double nut and they're out.

Naked long block  Full front "dress", oil pan, and misc brackets are off to powdercoating.

All hardware is off to cadmium plating. Approx 350 fasteners and that's just a small part of the car ;)

The iron block will need some help to look the part, but that should be an easy fix.

Taking advantage of the last few days of nice weather, I blacked out the area behind grille and bumper cover.
Both had serious ivory overspray from old repaints. The new grille and the new cover will expose those areas a lot more, so it had to be addressed.
Also I touched up the bare metal areas where the bumper reinforcement was trimmed for the fog light openings.

Before and after ....

I don't think you will even see the block unless it's on the lift.
Well, it will be on the stand a little longer, so this should do it ;) Block painted, and mating surfaces prepped for reassembly.

You going to be replacing the chain tensioners on the motor?
It's an interesting question. In 03-04 Cobras Ford started using plastic non ratcheting tensioners.
As with everything, there are two different schools about which design is better.
However, on this engine the tensioners are ALL metal, so they must've been replaced at some point.
Keeping that in mind, and overall internal condition of the engine, I think I'll let them go as is, unless the owner decides otherwise.

All those who told me that Jeremi was the best choice to do this swap, boy were you ever right :D
I couldn't be happier with his work and his attitude.
Thanks for the tip.

The KB is a 2.6H.
"H Series - Big Bore (+15 psi) Twin Screws, less parsitic loss and 30 degress cooler air charge temps."

Not much of an update, but the cadmium plated hardware is back from the shop.

IMG_00000799.jpg

The powdercoating however will require a redo, as the amount of flake doesn't match some previously coated parts by another shop.

Just a small delay :embarrassed:

Do you have a special price on that plated hardware? Did you have to prep it?

I am debating on trying to find nickel/chrome plated or stainless ones for my project.

This place I use doesn't mind dealing with small orders which is the most difficult thing to find. The price is usually in the $125-$150 range for a "bucket" of hardware.

I didn't have to do any prep, as the parts weren't in that bad shape. If heavily rusted, I'd run them thru the blaster. Some coatings like POR15 won't come off either :eek-large: so need to be stripped prior to "cad bath".

They do cad (goldish), bright cad (which is what you see here), zinc, and olive drab. No nickel though. I also have another place that does chrome, but I am not sure of the pricing.
