Chip came in, how do I install? (Need to take ECU out of care if so how?)

Ahh the " great chip wars" of 2000-2001!

The rebel alliance was smashed and scattered througout the galaxy.

There are some outposts still operational, but they are considered "rag tag fugitive fleets" at best.

most keep to themselves rather than trying to convince anyone else of anything.. alot of them learned alot from the Great Chip Wars, if you were bright enough to "read between the lines".

Alot has changed in the tuning industry over the last 5 or so years.
most noteable was the release of the SCT tuning software that removed 99% of the "VOODOO" involved with calibrating PCM's.

Some still hide behind "VOODOO" and others have come from behind the VOODOO wall and stood on their own two feet in the bright sunlight.

This dis-proved the rumor that Tuners were vampires and could only be seen "at night" and by those that swore to keep their voodoo ties a secret.

The chip wars was only surpassed by the great "Muffler Wars" but since no "honorable vendors" were involved it was just "regular peoples opinions vs regular peoples opinions" there were no casulties reported from the muffler wars.

I cant/wont comment on accusations against LMS.
I can only speak of my own personal experience I had back then.

I am not saying Geno nor Diablo sent you a bogus chip.

We are trying to help you troubleshoot your issue, which is something that Geno has already been "PAID TO DO"...
Yet.. here we are...speculating at best, because

1. we dont know what geno did to your chips programming
2. we dont know the state of tune or lack of tune on your car
things like when was the last time you changed the plugs, fuel filter, spark plug wires..etc???

So we're just assumming that your car is in "tip top" state of tune and you are really dealing with a bad chip... who knows at this point.

YOU are the one that believes you have a bogus chip, we're just trying to determine if it IS actully a bogus chip or an underlying issue with your vehicle.

neutral rev limit stock is 6000 RPM's
so it does sound like you have a good connection with the chip.

Why you are thinking it's not working would be a product OF the programming ON the chip.

Like I said before, in a chip that's tuned right.. IN a car that RUNS right.. there IS NO QUESTION if the chip works or not.

The difference is NIGHT AND DAY, it's not a "subtle change" to the car.

lms was accused of reselling stock chips? this doesnt make sense? diablo sent me a thing that goes on the j3 adapter, why would they send me a bogus chip, the hardware costs the money right?

No, no, not a bogus chip. At that time tuners claimed to have proprietary custom tunes on their chips and that is why they charged a bit more money for their voodoo. LMS said that they use Diablo blank chips then burn their own custom program on it. So there was accusations that the chip LMS was using could not be burned by them and it was the same chip and programming that Diablo sells for the mark viii for less money. Like i said this was never proven one way or the other.
Like was said this was in 2000 and 2001 and the chips are kind of old school now with hand held programmers and dyno tuning. Not trying to say you got a bogus chip or anything or that it won’t improve performance, it is just that I have not heard anything about Diablo chips in a long time and it brought back memories of the chip and vendor wars.

WOW, I feel like I really missed something. Wish I was around for the action.

whew.. it was a near riot situation at times.

in the end we all learned alot about "internet hype" and "online vendors"..and alot about the people we interacted with on the message boards.

IMHO it wasn't a "bright spot" in the Mark 8 history, quite the opposite as it split the community literally "in half".

You would have had to "been" there to find any humor in what I posted.
it was a JOKE, no need to get your Genostring all wadded up.

It was funny what you posted, but yes you had to be around here at the time to see it. :D

It could be used as a sociological study about the emergence of internet communities.

There were also lots of friendships lost as well; indeed it was not a bright spot considering the small numbers of our community.

That's an understatement if I've I've ever heard one.

I just got my notification of a new post here and find that it's not a new post but 4 additional pages. I spent about an hour or so on the phone today with JP and this very topic was a good percentage of our discussion. Not the same vendors just same instances. But your statement is right on.

It could be used as a sociological study about the emergence of internet communities.

There was a lot more lost than that. It almost put some businesses under.
At that time there were very, I'm mean very few of us tuners that actually had the ability to write our own programming. Diablo at that time allowed very few of their dealers the software to write their own programming. They would email their programs to the dealers the dealers would then data log as best they could, send the info back to Diablo where it was evaluated and then send out a new changed program. Autologic wasn't as bad and those that used it could write their own programs. But the software between these two was very limited since they didn't have the inside knowledge of how the Ford processors actually worked. We then had Jerry W that who was the Ford calibrator so he had the access, knowledge, hardware and software to enable him to give us much better programming that ever before. Those of us that were in his close circle benefited greatly from his knowledge and willingness to share his software. Those that had a good understanding of Ford's strategies and tuning were allowed access to the software. This small circle of people actually worked together in order to help Jerry improve the software with our own businesses and assisting Jerry in thousands of dyno tuning session by data logging and data basing every vehicle we could get our hands on. These people actually had proprietary programming but shared a lot of it with each other. There was also a company that sold Jerry's chips for him that basically did the same thing as Diablo did with their dealers. This dealer was claiming they did their own tuning just like Geno. This is where the war began between that dealer and Geno. Shortly after this Jerry was ready to start a new business from all the years of testing and developing his software. This became SCT. Jerry is no longer part of SCT in any way sadly. Yes I am still in contact with him, at least weekly. Now with SCT catering to the wholesale companies you have a lot of cookie cutter programs that SCT has supplied to them that claim they are custom or proprietary when in fact they are just off the shelf programs that you can get from the new preloaded handheld tuners. You have to go with the dealers that actually do offer custom tuning. But then they can lie just like back in the chip war days.

History lesson over.......

AbrahamLincoln, another thing no one has touched on is the possibility you have a bad chip, it happens. I just dealt with someone yesterday that had a chip that would take a program but would not work in the vehicle. Although this was a used chip they purchased from another person they some times fail. I've have a few that didn't work right out of the box. Just something to think about.

yes and ultimately I think that is the problem. Gene said to send it back however while i had it i wanted to rule out any other possibilities of installation error or what have you. He said to come on down, and hed take a look at it for me, but i hadn't had the time yet. I think I am going to do that before i have to reship it and wait for them to ship it back up from florida again. Makes more sense to have the vendor look at it and make the final judgement call. Because I dont to get another chip and be right where I started a week and a half later.
