Can you explain what I'm supposed to see? I see a lot of carbon as well as the circular metal edges seem to have bent from being hit. (by the valves I'm guessing?)

Go to a parts store and get a combustion leak test kit. It won't completely rule out a head gasket leak, but it'll probably show you if you do.

Doesn't matter. Alternators period are notoriously bad. I went through a (US?) reman, and a mexico "new" alternator before I got a third one to actually work on my old jeep. I've noticed that other car brands have similar issues.
